I went up Saturday and had a great time. He showed me how to fix some ob mistakes i make and also how to out my pup, which was in the stages of becoming a problem (i thought). My marker training was baaaad and he showed me the proper way to make it clearer to the dog. He just grabbed the leash and started working KC and the pup was enjoying the hell out of it, he said KC was a really nice dog, kudos to Jason and Betty (and Arras & Spy, who did the hard part, lol)
My bride came up with me and now she's a complete professional and corrected my handling a few times today, "doesn't look like when he did it", LOL. It does help with another pair of eyes though.
I met a bunch of nice people too. A couple of folks from the Leerburg board were there (one of the ladies dog was one of Cindy's breedings), a few ring people, a couple of SAR people, basically a nice mix of people and dogs.
We learned A LOT and so the processing is still going on. It made me wish i was a better trainer for my dogs sake, the poor pup is going to have to deal with my crappy technique and handling though, we're a team and the pup is the better player.
It's definitely worth the time to attend. I found out that my marker training is completely wrong, timing, delivery etc. It makes a huge difference when he takes the leash and shows you vs explaining it, i actually saw the dog "getting it" with my own eyes, a picture is worth a thousand words! Just going the one day is going to make me a better trainer which means it gets easier on the dogs and more fun too!
One other note : when you do something wrong for a long time it's hard to change and get it right, lol
Al, after watching your videos and seeing your obedience...it's hard to imagine you had it *wrong*. However, changing up on technique and bettering your methods is always a good thing, IMO. Glad you had a good time and this seminar was a success!
I will certainly attend as many as I can....it's all in the timing. Never knew it was so hard to keep my hands still for 1 second after saying one little word!
Al, you're right, it is incredible how fast the dog gets it when it's done right.
This was one of the best seminars I've been to. As Al said, you find out everything you've been doing wrong for the last 5-6 months, LOL, but I walked away with a much better idea of how to improve my handling skills.
I have some pictures and more videos to upload; will share when they are up. I got some great footage of Michael working his dog Pie (is that how it's spelled?).
