Michele, instead of calling the people who work the reservation desk, call airport information and ask them for the number of the appropriate air cargo building where they can answer your question about the cargo hold (conditions, light, etc). I was told that a dog is loaded from the air cargo area, not from the terminal, so basically you take the dog to air cargo, drop him off, then go to the terminal to catch your flight. I'm a little fuzzy about that, but I believe air cargo takes the dog to the terminal to be loaded on the plane.
I know you can talk to the air cargo people at whatever airport you leave from because I was able to.

When I fly with my dog, he goes as over sized luggage, and I always take him to the ticket counter. Then, they have to call some special TSA person who comes over and tells me to take my dog out of the crate (if I have him in it), so they can inspect it, then I put my dog in the crate, zip tie the door & they take him away to wait with over sized luggage until time to load.
I've used Frontier, American Airlines, United, Delta and Alaska. They have all been pretty good and pretty much the same. I haven't used Continental because of the expense. All the airlines I mentioned charge $100. each way, for my full grown GSD. Continental has quoted me $300.
I think where you deliver the dog is airport and airline specific. Some airports you go to Cargo, others you go to the checkin desk and they take the dog from there.
Find out where to take the dog before travelling. You need alot of extra time if you have to drive to cargo first, park, get out, deal with that, then go to the terminal.
I think in many cases checkin can handle it, but not all.
Its also alot easier to park in front of the cargo building and drop off 2 dogs and 2 crates one at a time, than trying to get through a busy airport with multiple dogs if you are taking more than one.
