Well, here's the pictures of my "silver/gray sable" GSD( with white splashes) I had as a child about whom I posted above, Meri (Mercedes) - this is a link to the whole album, in case you're interested (warning these are old pics, about 45 yrs old and include me as a kid - AHH! - and my mom and sister and another little dog darling we had, named Tammy): http://s111.photobucket.com/albums/n129/metalasi/Meri%20-%20Mercedes/

Way cool Sandy.
Huh, well hows about that, a GSD with white markings.
Just goes to show.
Thanks Sandy for expanding my horizons.

Thanks for the comments guys. She was my jewel. Funny, her dad had the same coloring, but her mom was a black and tan - saddle.
Did you notice how OLD the cars were in the background of one of the photos that showed the street? I had never noticed them before I scanned these. And I'm sure a lot of you take power steering for granted

Sandy,
Thanks for posting those old pictures - a walk down memory lane! (Was that car in the background an Edsel?). It's funny how you wouldn't be able to "date" a photograph of just a dog - only the people and the background gives away the age of the photo.

Your dog reminds me of London, the star of the Littlest Hobo. (That GSD also had white markings).

Just to make a note, Sandy your dog was indeed gorgeous! But I don't see white patches or spots, I see normal color variant for a sable dog
Light areas come with certain sable coat colors and I've seen nearly white throat and chests on saddlebacks too. Duke has light chest patches and a light throat, here is another example:

and

and showing other light areas/undercoat showing :

White spotting and white patches etc are specific genes and I do believe aside from genetic mutations, which are rare, that amount of white would have to come from one or both parents having visible white. Solid colors/natural colors (read as lack of white spotting) are dominant to white spotting/piebald genes.

Sandy, thanks for sharing all those pics - they're wonderful!! I love the color in the couple that aren't black and white... that strangely saturated but aged spectrum is really beautiful. There's nothing so fun as old photographs, and Meri looks like the kind of dog that every kid wants growing up - powerful, elegant, kind, willing and brave, all at once - you were so fortunate to have her.

I feel a little guilty feeling like I've hijacked this thread, but it came about from noting the OP's GSD had some white markings.
Thanks for everyone's comments!
Great info as always, Jennifer, and thanks for your comment on Meri (pronounced "Mary" btw in case anyone was wondering)
Thank you too Natalya, for your comments on Meri. She was all those things you saw, very perceptive of you
