Boy Rich, maybe I'm odd but I enjoyed everybit of it. Dogs included.
I enjoyed the dog part too.
My daughter (the one with dogs), while we were both at the home of my other daughter (the one with little humans, three of them age five and under), said "Dog poop is SO much less objectionable than diaper poop!"

It depends on the Mrs. If I told my wife I was planning on getting a new Schutzhund puppy the same time a new baby was arriving, the puppy might remain intact but I know I wouldn't.
Working line GSD in most cases do not make good house dogs therefore if you want a pet I think is best to select a dog that was bred to be one.
WHAT????
I'd like to second that WHAT???
Maybe it takes more effort on the part of the owner, but working line GSDs can most certainly live in the house. Isn't that the goal of most - to have a true working dog that can be versatile and stable in all situations?
To the original poster, what about an older dog? Something that has been prepped for Schutzhund...puppies are a crap shoot any how...that way you have a better chance of getting your Schuzhund prospect without the craziness of raising a pup.
before my son was born, i thought i could still do the things i wanted to do,
but the first year was hell, no sleep for 10 months can effect the way we work
and live, i remember being in survival mode for the first year. I would suggest
waiting a good year or so after your child is born so you guys can find your groove,
You are both made of sterner stuff than my wife and I
Of course, we were nearly 34 when our daughter, first child, was born on our 10th wedding anniversary. Maybe you guys were younger when you had your first. But still, having a puppy and a new born at the same time ... not where I'd want to go.
WOW, well this has been an informative thread since I am in a very similar boat (August) . Still on the fence with what I'm going to do this year though.
George, congrats!! and keep us posted on what you decide.
