Interesting topic. I don't train protection dogs so my dogs responding to another persons command isn't really a big deal. I find that they just don't listen to other people and provide the doggie version of the finger to anyone except me which is totally fine.
I did however teach a few hand signs to the dogs along with the usual basic obedience commands. Eventually I dropped the verbal or will alternate useing one and not the other for the same meaning after training with them together for a long time. Dogs are experts in body language and really understand movements for commands exceptionally well.
