I should have been a bit more clear on my post. My post was for the original poster, not for you, Will. It would have been nice if California wasn't so harsh on self-defense cases like your state. It's near to impossible to obtain a CCW here. If a cop notices a pocket knife on you(although legal), he/she will ask, "What's that for?". If you end up in a fist-fight, whether the other guy started it or not, you'll still get arrested for fighting in public. It sucks around here.

It's within your legal rights to protect yourself from bodily harm ( unless you live in one of the leftist pinko nanny states ) Which is why I left California where I was raised and spent most of my life, a state I loved. Pity it's turned into the kind of state you mentioned.
Even here in AZ, I've been told by law enforcement that if someone is stealing my car or in my house stealing my stuff, I can't use my PPD dog or my gun because it would be unreasonable force. Unreasonable my a**. Since they haven't been successful in bringing down the 2nd Amendment, they're insidiously working on people's right to self-defense with a gun.

Exactly! Don't they even consider the fact that it's 'unreasonable' for said person to intrude on our privacy/lives to begin with? Goes back to the legal loophole that if someone breaks into your house, and injurs themself, they can sue you for damages. what's happening to our 'justice' system?

What did you say? if someone injures themselves while trespassing and stealing your stuff, they can sue you?? Are you serious??
So if someone breaks into your home whle you are away, and your dog (who was securely contained inside the 4 walls of your house and not running at large being vicious) bites them, it's somehow YOUR fault?

I have a friend who lived in CA 20 or 30 years ago, she had a friend who was a veteran and had his retired MWD. He kept the dog tied in the house to keep him from going through the windows to get to pedestrians.
A burglar entered the house, the dog quietly waited until the guy got within chain range and then attacked the guy (smart dog).
So the jerk sued the owner, who ended up loosing all his assets, including his home, in the failed fight to save his dog from euthanasia.
I will never live in California ((** mod delete of inappropriate comment **)) because of such insanity.

The protect-the-criminal mentality seems to be everywhere, from what I read.

We're having the problem of loose dogs & fence-fighting.
Our two have full run of 'their' yard. (Approx 1.5 acres) It's fenced, but that wire, square style, not chainlink. Our neighbor has 4 large dogs (2 lab mixes, 1 white GSD mix, and one chow-coyote mix) They're all 'we think they are...' mutts, because they just gradually showed up.
Our problem is, the 'neighbor' is my grandfather, and the grandmother we are living with to care for won't let us call animal control because, 'they were here first, not your dogs'.
SO, I can only hope that when a dog gets hurt fence fighting, it isn't mine! We've actually debated using the horse-style hot wire on the fence....
