Yes, let's talk about horses!
I haven't been following the Olympic Equestrian Events though. I'm a cow horse guy.
This is the horse I keep telling my horses to use as their role model.
ETA: I've just found out the Norwegian Jumping team (bronze medalist) was disqualified because one of their horses was doped.
I never got into western riding, maybe it's a location thing. It's hard to picture someone herding dairy cows and that's pretty much what we have here in the northeast. There are a few western folks, I have a friend that does barrel racing, but it seems like most of the horse people I know are into the European equestrian sports and fox-hunting (we use a drag-line here) so it's what I'm more familiar with.
Somebody gave me a western saddle once, so I thought I'd try using it out on hacks (trail rides), but I didn't care for it. I felt trapped between the pommel and cantle and it KILLED my knees. Maybe I didn't give it a fair shake, but my horse wasn't really a western type anyway. Was it the just that saddle or do western saddles in general do a number on knees?
I've never had that kind of problem, what type of saddle was it? and which size? maybe it was too small?

With a horse like TR Dual Rey you could herd CATS!!! What a guy.........oh right there's olympics going on somewhere.......
Yeah, Dual Rey is stamping some really sick moves on his babies, Dual Smart Rey is another interesting horse.
Bobs Hickory Rio is another stallion worth watching. Different style from TR but very electric.

That's the whole album, there are some pics in there that friends, etc have taken, and a few proofs from some events.

Have you seen the "Thrills and Spills" video? It's more fodder for the worried mum.
Oh, yeah. I enjoy watching that... sometimes I can even feel their pain...
It's good to know what you are getting into, though.
I think they just voted eventing as one of the most dangerous sports on some twisted tv special. At least that is what I was told at my barn...

I'm not surprised eventing is considered one of the most dangerous sports: First add one HOT horse (they have to be to have the energy to get through the course) + obstacles that don't move (like stone walls and tree trunks!), add water (literally) and STIR. I like the relative peace and quiet of dressage; it's less 'deathwish' and more 'floating cloud' My daughter thinks dressage is boring though, and it's her least favorite phase. She's such a brat.
Luis: I'm not sure what kind of saddle it was, but it looked older. It felt like it was both huge and binding, if that makes any sense. My knees are terrible anyway, but I'm used to very thinnish, well-oiled stirrup leathers, and it felt like the leather holding the stirrup on the western saddle was really putting a lot of torque on my knees. I didn't like having that much leather between me and the horse either. I felt like I couldn't really get my legs on him in any appreciable way. I'm short, so my stirrup length isn't too long, and I think that made it worse.
I don't really have much in the way of photo's online (my sister likes to make albums/books) but there are some in my Myspace pics : a couple of my daughter's horse, a couple of an old Percheron I used to have and some dog photos. None of me on a horse, nothing new or exciting, but here you go
The Percheron was my buddy. I used to ride him all over the island, so I called him my 'second car'.
It's a little sad, because I just closed up the barn to move to town so the horses are now scattered to the four winds and I won't have any at home any more. It's okay, because I didn't have a 'current equine project' anyway, and my daughter is now in high school, but it's still weird in spite of the timing being good (because the old woman is tired).
I like it in the 'thrills and spills' video when the get water in their boots and have to put their feet in the air to get it out
