Randy I hate to disagree with you but just as herding traits have been selected for, as have retrieving traits, and a million other things, dog aggression is a trait that can be passed on.

The "aggressions" you listed are caused by drive - prey drive, primarily. It is not the aggression towards the specific object, it is the expression of prey drive that leads to aggression.

Dog aggression in game bred dogs is a whole nuther ballgame. I'm a bull breed fanatic, I love the American Bulldog it is my breed through and through. I fully realize that certain lines are prone to dog aggression.

In this case the dog aggression is not just an expression of other drives or traits - such as social aggression/rank drive. While social aggression plays a huge part and is the basis for the dog aggression, the trait is only expressed towards dogs, not humans. General traits and drives such as rank drive/social aggression are not limited this way to only dogs and excluding humans. If a dog is rank driven its rank driven, doesn't matter what it is dominating, it is being dominant. The dog aggression in cases of game bred dogs is only supposed to be directed towards dogs, hence the breed being famous as family dogs that were fought and used.

There are dog aggressive dogs, and then there are dogs bred to be dog aggressive. There are many ways and lots of things that can lead up to dog aggression in a general sense, with any dog - the control of the trait is a training and handling issue, but the trait itself should not be downplayed for something it is not.

We use and manipulate and suppress the other natural traits and drives of our dogs. I am not making excuses for dog aggression, I am only explaining that it is a trait bred for like any other that for everyone's well being and safety, should be handled and controlled properly.

Jennifer, I don't think that this is the place for any kind of disagreement on the issue of dog traits and genetics. Ashley has posted more about her dog and what she is doing about the "incident" that occurred. Hate to say it, but as Connie said earlier...

Sounds like you are doing great! I sometimes think many big dogs just don't like the little breed dogs. I find that with my GSD and Labs. I think it's their kind of bark, drives them crazy!

Hi!Jennifer..You mentioned Bc and I hate to admit this but I have serious problems with my BC and agression to other dogs.Everyone keeps saying that its normal for males to dislike other males but with mine..well if he'd have the chance I'm sure he'd bite a chunk out of the other dog!I really don't know how to sort this agression out!I've tried obedience..I've tried just to ignore it but unfortunately nothing seems to help!Sorry,just thought I'd mention this..didn't mean to cut in to the on going conversation!

I would recommend that you start a new thread and also consult with a trainer, because "ignoring it" is a very bad plan.
