... They don't have decades to accumulate it either. It would seem that it would temper the concern.
The thing is that the mercury that falls from the sky (literally) increases all the time. This increase was triggered a couple of hundred years ago (the industrial revolution) and it grows all the time as developing nations add their own mercury emissions to the whole. There is still a significant amount of mercury released into the ecosystem with its use in some kinds of mining, too.
I read in some article (sorry, no citation; my brain is mercury-addled ) that three to four times as much mercury lands in the water and on the ground than did just prior to the industrial revolution.
So it's not just a case of more information, although certainly that's significant. It's a case of more mercury released into the atmosphere (and deposited directly onto ground and water).
All JMO.

Steven,
Many would say I'm barely with ya
Good point on the accumulation. I may feed Alex (11 y/o) the ahi heads I have in the freezer. But I think I'll wait till Cleo (5+ mos) gets a little older. I think the mercury might adversely impact her development. S'pose I'm just an overly doting doggie father.
Don't be too jealous. We have NO locally grown chicken farms/producers and very little locally grown meat (land is just too pricey). Local "butcher shops" don't have the whole animal carcass. So I pay a relative arm and leg for chicken....$11 for a 5 lb. bag of IMPORTED frozen chicken necks But, I do get duck necks for $.99/lb. Still, I imagine that's a fortune compared to mainland prices.
Tell ya what Steve, I'll trade you some fish heads for some good ol' butcher shop scraps

I was on the big island once, and remember seeing a number of hippy type farmer people.
Gotta be chicken or rabbit hobbyists somewhere with whom you can form a relationship. I'd think.

Been looking. Going to try to post a want ad on Craigslist.
You're right about the hippie types on the Big Island (and Maui and Kauai for that matter). Problem is I live on Oahu. Shipping costs are too high for small quantities of meat.
I would love to find a rabbit breeder. Another thought: Perhaps I can buy a couple of bunnies at the pet store and let nature take it's course. Problem: I'll have to do a heckuva lot of wife-convincing.

This particular breeder may not be what you are looking for, but they might be able to point you in the right direction. There are a lot of breeders who are not listed.
One or two does and one buck will provide a large quantity of meat over a year for relatively little work. The "processing" portion is the issue for most people.

Eric, I admire you for making this diet work for your dogs. I take for granted the sources I have that I get different meats from. Not a lot of people would work as hard as you are. Hats off.
Don't forget goats, too. Oh lordy, now THAT would be a find for any of us!
My wife won't fall for letting me grow my own, either. Whenever I trick my wife into letting me raise my family's and my dog's meat, I will let you know my formula for success. Don't hold your breath.

Thanks Deena, I will give that guy a call; hopefully he already has some butchered or knows someone who does. I think the Mrs. will be a big obstacle to raising my own.
Mike, after seeing the improvement in my old boy, I would NEVER feed anything else, no matter how difficult. I'll tell you what, though: It would have been MUCH more difficult without you guys. You and everyone else here have been such a GIGANTIC help. I have avoided so many mistakes and pitfall because of you guys Plus, when I freaked out the first time my puppy Cleo swallowed a chicken wing whole, you in particular and everyone in general, calmed me down. If it weren't for you guys, I probably would have rushed her to the vet
BTW, I broached the rabbit raising idea with my wife; suffice it to say, she wasn't thrilled. If you learn and can teach me the "formula," I'll forever be in you debt

You just gotta set up a situation where a rabbit REALLY pi$$es her off. That's why my wife wouldn't really consider hunting unless it were for Canada Goose.

Or you can search YouTube for videos about the chicken industry, and the rabbit industry, showing you the horrors of how they are raised and how they meet their pitiful end.
I am raising ducks, chickens, and rabbits now. I haven't had to buy meat for a while other than cheap hb for the dogs. I can't do my own cow on .25 acre. :-)
Oh, and the homegrown chicken is soooo tasty. Moist. No hormones, no antibiotics, and mine got to breathe fresh air and have a life.
