Thats great stuff!! Just look at the power of an open mind. As soon as that electricity is stored we can throw on a carbon tax and send a couple more bureaucrats to the partys at the UN!
Really? Maybe it's because Toronto has such a large Tamil community (at least 200,000; I think it's the largest Tamil diaspora in the world) but I'm always surprised people don't know about the LTTE. I have Tamil friends, my brother dated a Tamil girl for 5 years....so I guess I always try to follow what's going on there. The protests recently have started since the current Sri Lankan offensive has been so effective and the LTTE has gotten pinned and lost so much ground.
I'm not unsympathetic to Tamil rights - but it's hard to be sympathetic to suicide bombers. I know the LTTE has military wings (and an air force made up of what, one cessna after the raid on colombo last month? heh), but it really comes down the suicide bombings, and targetting of civilians, for me. And I know that while the Sri Lankan government may not be strong on human rights, the LTTE is particularly bad, to Tamils even. To be honest, most Tamils I know are not LTTE supporters, but maybe it's just the group I know. My brother used to work with a guy who was in the Tigers (joined up at around 15 after his parents had been killed) and he hated the LTTE. It's weird though b/c as far as I know, while the LTTE has been declared a terrorist group by the Canadian government (and other governments) and it can't overtly fundraise here, it still 'taxes' the Tamil community in Toronto
But I was really surprised today - while the protest in January talked about Tamil rights and criticized the Sri Lankan government, no mention was made of the LTTE, despite that being a fairly obvious undercurrent. But today - I just finished posting my pics on facebook, and even from the start of the protest where there were just a few people - Tiger flags everywhere, all the signs were pro-Tiger - I was surprised. I assumed that in January the protest stayed away from being pro-Tiger to get the sympathy of ordinary people ('they're not terrorists, after all') but maybe because things have been going badly, all pretence was dropped today.
Jennifer,
I am *shocked* that anyone else has even heard of the Tamil Tigers ( outside of the Special Ops community ).
You guys give me hope that people are actually paying attention in the world!
Nah, Will. You're just old.
Since 9/11, the Army has implemnted mandatory, YEARLY anti-terrorism training.
We get to learn ALL ABOUT terrorist groups, of all sorts. Tamil Tigers, FARC, PMOI (the jury is still out as to whether they're terrorists or allies, LOL.)
So much fun.
And after that, the annual suicide brief, EO...
Oh dear, there I go talking about the military again.
