.... I'm not interested in immediately placing her in a day care facility. .... The only reason the "Day care" popped up right now was on the advice of the GSD Rescue director to have her evaluated in a controlled environment by professionals. He did not feel a vet evaluation was going to help much. .... Is it your thoughts that it's "too soon" or do I get her back up on the horse?
Drew, I am going to be absolutely clear on this, and I speak from experience.
Not the experience of Ed and Cindy, but please note that they are telling you the same thing.
This dog is not a doggy day care candidate, ever. Period.
But this one "never" is in no way a big problem. That's the part you seem to be maybe getting stuck on. The dog does not "need" doggy day care in any case. Evals do not require doggy day care and no eval is going to make this dog suitable for doggy day care.
The dog needs to have a strong handler and normalcy at home, while always controlled. This is no different from the way owners of dog-aggro dogs manage their dogs, anyway. In fact, it's the way many owners of strong dogs live with their dogs.
Not to babble, but there is no big "oh no, my dog must live in jail" thing.
Drew, if you must do something w/her during the day, get a dog walker.
Do you think the people at ACME Doggy Day Care are smarter than your dad? I doubt it. They'll do something stupid and the dog will kill another dog, and this time, you'll get sued and your dog could be killed for it.
I think it is remarkable that you are not furious w/your Dad. If someone disobeyed my rules and cost one of mine their lives, you would see me on the evening news.
This very scenario is my worst nightmare, and why I never leave mine w/"normal" people.
Jenni,
Oh believe me, Furious is an understatement, I've just left that out to spare everyone from reading about more of my rambling and drama. Bear in mind the only contact with him I've had over the matter is via the phone so all I can go with is what I was told and that was "I had to run an errand".
Those who use the crate know how difficult that can be to establish and he was around during that phase so i have no clue what he was thinking.
All I could do is what I have done and that was to remove her from the situation (which she should be here tonite around 8pm, the anticipation is killing me!)
Connie,
Message received loud and clear. I believe everyone here has responded with the best intentions and I'm thankful to all of you, it's nice to be among friends and to share your experiences.
Right now I'm a sponge trying to soak up as much information as I can. As grateful as I am to have the Leerburg forums I am hoping to find someone local who can go hands-on to evaluate her. If anyone happens to know of anyone qualified in Northern NJ?
As I mentioned previously, I am not in a position to NEED 'day care' services, my only interest in that was me being concerned with her becoming anti-social all together. As with everything else in life this experience is simply showing me I don't know half as much as I thought I would with my dog (and thats an uncomfortable feeling)
