The stick is not used until the dog is VERY far along in training.
A good helper will not introduce the stick at all until he knows (through his working with your dog) that the dog is mentally ready for the stimuli.
Prong collar corrections are more painful than the stick is.
The helper won't use a stick on your dog if he doesn't think he can handle it, and your training director will help you bring the dog along and build him up so it's no big deal.
So its like an AKC obediance test then except more advanced.Ugo already does the long down, just not on command yet and as soon as he lays down, immediantly turns on his side and goes to sleep. He will sit on command to play fetch and bring it back to me,even drops his toy in my hand. I didn't train him to do that,he just does it. Maybe he has a touch of narcalepsy?
Nah... it's just typical of his breed, LOL.
You might lose a point for him snoring, though.
If he likes to play fetch, he can be worked in Schutzhund.
That chase (prey) drive is the foundation of all the work.
If the dog has that, he can be taught the rest.
I guess I need to see if I can find a SchH club somewhere and see how it all works. The dog doesn't ever assocoate the stick with the handler does it,just the helper?
At an advanced level, the helper will surrender the stick to the handler, but the handler will NEVER use the stick on the dog, threaten his dog with the stick or otherwise allow the dog to form an association between the stick and the handler.
What is BH and cpl? What kind of temperment tests will they do?
Will they use a stick as part of the temperment test? I'm not comfortable with that even if it is padded leather, what if it traumatized them? I don't want to create a fear biter.
What titles has your Boxer learned and how long did it take?
When you get tired of answering my questions just tell me,I understand if you do.
Pat, cpl is my abbreviation for couple
They will probably just test your dogs to see if they will chase after a leather bite rag, or a tug on a long line. You will most likely be out there encouraging your dog while he is on a long line as well. It should not be stressful at all, and should be pretty fun for the dogs.
My Boxer got her CGC at around 8 mos, and her BH around 2.5 yrs. I started training her in SchH late (around 20 mos I think). But she has had all good experiences.
No problem about the questions Let me know if you have any more.
LOL forgive Alex, I thought cpl was a title, I told you I didn't know anything about training dogs.
WOW,CGC at 8mos?!!! That has to be a record. I hope I have as good of luck with my two as you have with your Boxer.
