i am blessed with cats that will eat ANYTHING.
they eat EVO dry twice a day, with some canned food every other day. i haven't had and issues with the dry food with them.
they LOVED raw, and still get it whenever i can. they also catch their own birds and whatnot. they would steal venison from my dogs. they eat smaller bones just fine, i have had one cat gnaw on a marrow bone a time or two.
then too, they like to jump on my counters, open my cabinets, and get into things and feed themselves. i lost a whole loaf of bread between 2 cats yesterday!!!
i stopped vaccinating them a while ago, even though mine do go outside. they do wear a collar with all their (expired) tags so it at least looks like they are current.
as far as the kitten getting spayed, JUST do the rabies, and im sure you know, don't have it done when they do the spay.
honestly, you dont' need anything else vaccine wise.

I get chicken hearts with gizzards pretty regularly (I buy a bunch when they're on at the grocery store).
I think Mitch liked the livers b/c they're so smelly. He came to bed last night with liver goo stuck all along his cheeks....I bet Lear had fun cleaning that up.
I'm going to try blending livers with chicken hearts and see how that goes. Give that as a treat and then try the pre-made again....last time it wasn't popular, but maybe this time it'll work better.

This has been such an informative thread!
I did rabies only, she got her shot and a check up this morning.
I have been adding more meat to their diet as well, Fluff and crook hang out in the kitchen anyway whenever I am in their cooking so I have been just cutting off bits of whatever meat we are having and chunking it to them.
The other night I gave them each a chicken wing with the skin pulled off.
Fluff ate the meat and had a fit asking for more. Francine spent a good long while gnawing on the bone after she ate the meat off of hers so that is a good sign!!
I skipped the canned EVO that night because I worry that both canned and meat will make them puke.

I feed my cats the same way as my dog - raw. The cats eat whole chicken wings, liver, hearts, fish, and salmon oil. I am trying to get them to keep beef down, but so far it has not been very successful.
As for vaccinations - only rabies since it was required at the U.S.-Canada border. Since mine are indoor cats, they do not get any other vaccine.
If you're interested in feeding your cats raw, here is a great website. The little cartoon at the bottom of the vaccinosis page is pretty funny.

Sorry to hijack but would you feed pre made I feed pre made to my dog already and was going to add my foster cat to the meal sense it is made for dog and cat Natural Variety pre made raw. She is about to have kittens so giving them the best start from the bigging would be ideal.
Can i safely use the pre made stufff its so much easier at this point

It's the same food for both cats and dogs? That seems....odd. Cats are obligate carnivores, and dogs are scavengers/omnivores....I would expect different protein requirements, among other things. Don't know though.
She definitely will need more energy feeding though!
No chicken hearts or gizzards at the grocery store today....boo. Picked up some more beef liver and kidneys (already got a bunch in the freezer) and some ground turkey and will blend them up and see how that goes. All the chicken livers were gone this morning when I put the cats in their room!

So here is another random cat question.
Why on earth do they like to sleep on your face?
Fluff basically lives in our bedroom out of choice, she is just old and sort of crochety, more so since I stopped letting her go outside after she came home smelling like someone elses freshly dusted furniture!!
Every night it is a battle to either continually push her off me or to put her out of the room which causes anxiety for her. We have to use earplugs on the nights I boot her out because of the fuss she makes.
I would think she would get the hint, because I know I have been less than totally gentle about it a few time in my sleep.
She can't just lay nicely with me, she has to either sleep on my face, or on my chest and continually nudge my face with her cold wet nose and slobber all over me, and knead at my lips.

Esme is a drooler and kneader (of my neck). She sleeps against me now though, as she got that I disliked the neck kneading.
Well....raw tonight!
-chicken liver
-ground turkey
-bone meal
I blended it all together - Lear and Esme still seem unsure what to make of it, but Mitch fell on it. Maybe the pre-made wasn't liver-y and stinky enough for him? Hmmmm....I think tomorrow I'll do some beef liver or kidney, ground turkey, bone meal, and either tripe or some veg baby food.
Funny that the cat I thought was refusing raw before is now so into it! And I have a big thing of bone meal so he can get his bone that way
I do still have some grain-free kibble but I'm really going to try to go this route - just want to make sure the other two get into it! I'm sure they will.
Edited by Jennifer Mullen (04/23/2009 09:48 PM)
Edit reason: I was only going to do a teensy bit of organ tomorrow - enough for stink! - b/c there's been a lot of the past 2 nights....

Don't forget that ground food is deficient in taurine, which cats need. (Grinding increases the surface exposed to air, and air degrades taurine). So if you plan on switching them to ground raw (specially for the toothless guy!) don't forget the taurine supplement.

I'm going to start adding in supplements - hopefully pick some up this weekend! That and try to do hearts, which normally I can get.
I'm going to have to do ground, unfortunately....
For right now I'm mostly just trying to get them eating it, which is going well! I'll put down some kibble (grain-free) in the morning for them too.

If all goes well, I was wondering about buying frozen mice and grinding them - should be complete in terms of nutrition going on a prey model....has anyone done this? Siaty?
I need to price out grinders too....am saving up money for our trips, so this might be down the road, but that seems like a good possibility (I'm assuming my hand blender won't work on whole mice).
