...I have a friend that actually banded one of her male cats, like you would a steer, and they fell off within a couple weeks...
Wow, that's pretty scary. Even on the farm, any dogs or cats that needed sterilized went into town and spent a few hours at the vet's office.
Banding steers is an accepted method of sterilization. It's been shown to have less of an effect on weight gain than other methods.
Banding isn't so good for piglets. We used scalpels. The resulting wound was smaller with less risk of infection. Overall it healed quicker with less stress to the sow and piglets.
There are a couple of different ways to make the cuts. If you too would like to learn how, there are actually little "pig models" you can obtain to practice on...without the whole downside of working on a real, live little piglet.
JMO, but I don't agree with banding dewclaws with dental floss like some people do either. I know that doesn't apply to you, Keleah, since your dog is an adult.
For those who opt to do these procedures at home, I'm a big proponent of using the right methods and equipment for the situation....or taking them somewhere where it can be done correctly. JMO, but I think it's just as important to know how to handle what can go wrong (since something eventually will) before you try any of these things on your own.
Now back to my own private amusement that there are now "piglet simulators" out there. Chuckle...
Oddly, this reminds me of an column I read today about the grammar of a specific act, but being a good family-oriented Leerburg member we'll skip over that)

How would the type of castration effect weight? I thought any weight gain was associated with decreased metabolism due to loss of testosterone, which would be true no matter how the testosterone disappeared?
Sorry if this is way off topic, or interrupting the humorous human tangent...
Anyone else see an irony now in 'rubber band balls'?

The question really needs a new thread.
Unlike all the totally on-topic posts surrounding it.
PS
Kidding, unless you really want to discuss it. The thread has pretty much lost any connection with its original title.
