If this dog is to the point of "not much hair left" (your recent description) then we're not talking about normal shedding, and I think you know that. But you also say a vet has looked at the dog? Something's not adding up.
If the dog is to the point of "not much hair left" then going to another vet is the right answer. Healthy GSDs are not bald. Let us know what the second vet says.
Dogs go through shedding events, and each event has a duration.
A GSD goes through one shedding event per year. The duration of this event is 365 days.
OK, humor aside, my GSD sheds all the time, but once or twice a year he goes through what others here refer to as "blowing" his coat.
We have Hans dog hair everywhere. Everywhere. On the furniture, on the floor, in rooms he never goes into. My wife puts dinner on the table and there is dog hair in it. We order Chinese takeout and when it arrives Hans dog hair is already in it.
My wife is a gardener. The back yard is fenced so we don't have to worry about deer there, but they do come into the front yard. She collects the dog fur and puts it on the plants in the front yard and says it keeps the deer away. I suppose it may work, the tulips seem to last a little longer than they did before we got Hans. But birds also use it for nest building, so I have my doubts that it actually hangs around long enough to deter a deer during nest building and maintenance season.

I can't imagine what would happen if I used the Furminator (which I loooooove) every day. Twice a day, if I am reading correctly!
Oh wait ... I don't have to. I just read about it.
I'm just sorry that we all missed it for so long. It was in the very first post!
Can you link us to a picture? I am asking you this so we can see if you are going to have to be careful about protection from sun for a while.
e.t.a. Even without a photo, the picture in my mind of the results of weeks of Furminating twice a day would make me think very seriously about sun protection.
