Well, we know the old boy has thyroid problems, on rymadil, etc. Damn...gonna have to really research this one.
Off topic again;
Has the dog had blood work up before and since it's started on Rymadil?
That's some nasty stuff!
old dogs LOVE to learn new tricks |

Yes, he has had multiple blook work ups due to thyroid and a base line liver/kidney level and two work up since beginning the Rymadil. He is on the lowest dosage for him...12.5 mg in the morning and 12.5 mg at night. I do have to say, he is more alert, active, and his pain meds (Tramadol) are cut by a 3rd now.
Remember, he has spondylosis and his spine is fusing right now. I am trying to keep him comfortable so we can still do our 1.5 miles (which translates to 3 miles for him since he ranges and cuts back and forth over the terrain and through woods). The more he can move, the better for him.
Never worry about getting off topic with my threads. Nuggets of information, questions, etc are what enables me to learn and take care of both my dogs. Thanks for the question.

Edit reason: named pain med

Yes, Rymadil works as well as the others in this round of NSAIDs. But there are two with better safety records. I'm very glad he's being blood-tested.
I have one on NSAIDs (crushed disks), and yes, they can be incredibly helpful inflammatory pain.
They aren't the nerve-wracking balancing act that Pred and other steroids are (for me, anyway), but they do need regular monitoring.

Just wanted to add another nugget: Tramadol is a go-to for me, too, for dogs' pain: it's not an NSAID, of course, so cannot directly attack inflammation (which is a trigger), but it sure is a good straight analgesic with a good record for dogs.

I'd like to suggest Acute Trauma as an alternative to Rymadil or Tramadol. http://leerburg.com/77.htm
It's safe to give every day forever if you need to. I have Morgan on it, and have since her CVI diagnosis. I'm even giving it to Raine for her discomfort after surgery.
Back to the previous discussion.

Did you give with an opiate (or Tramadol) and then wean off the opiate? Or just start with the Acute Trauma?

I am glad you remind of blood testing. I have NO problems with being reminded of the dangers of his meds and to take care. If I have to up the dose, I will probably insist we look at other meds and really take a look at the new data and see if there is any double blind studies done recently on Rymadil.
He is such a fine dog for me (even if he can never be trusted around other dogs or children), and I do love his spirit. He never "complains".

I want to know also. I will definitely look into the Acute Trauma. But, I do need to know how it was done, and can I use it in conjunction with Rymadil until I wean him off (getting the A.T. in his system you see) and do I give with Tramadol? And, remember, Bubbalicious (Hambone) is on Thyroid meds. It can't be contra-indicated for Thyroid or it will cause him problems.

Update on Hambone:
Ear is completely cleared up...Yippee! I believe it is partly due to my diligence at cleaning (of course), but more than 1/2 to using THK and meat, digestive enzymes, and probiotics. Due to hypothyroidism, we know he is immune suppressed, so I am certain his new diet and supplementation has helped immensely.
Vet says no more raw ground meat. Immune system isn't the greatest, so e. coli and salmonella infection is a factor to consider with this guy. HOWEVER! fresh meat (see fresh caught squirrel or rabbit, etc or fresh whole chunks of beef or buffalo) is acceptable and okay to give him.
So, while cooking the ground turkey lightly may kill the amino acids and natural enzymes in it, it will give him added protein that is easy to digest...especially since I am mixing digestive enzymes in with his food.
So, fresh meat or lightly cooked ground, distilled white vinegar and water solution 3 x a week in his ears and continue with his diet as is, and he should, hopefully, have no more problems.
