The boys are behaving nicely now! They still try to get each other going by growling and barking but I tell them to stop and have Chip on a leash so it’s easy to separate them. After that they will lie down beside each other and be content. I love training dogs when I have success, with everyone’s support here and Ed’s DVD’s I’m looking forward to a new way of living with my dogs.
Just a quick update: I threw away all toys made of ropes, stuffed animals and any other toys that could be used to play tug with. Nylabones and balls are all they get…and they’re mine. I pick them up in the evening or when ever I want them to relax. If either one tries to elicit play by growling and or biting behavior I immediately stop it. The pup is on a leash so this is really easy.
So far this is working out well. Recently I found the pup could not relax for long without getting up and moving, getting up and moving over and over. He prefers to lie on an AC vent so I moved from where I normally sit on the couch to the other end where a vent is. Now the pup can see me and lay on the vent…all is quiet.
One other thing that seems easy but is weird when doing it is to praise after a correction. The pup now knows the “yuck” command and when he drops it I praise him. I sound like a Schizophrenic, “YUCK, GOOD”. “NO…GOOD. This was counter intuitive to me and until I saw Ed do it I wasn’t sure it would work. My wife laughs at how it sounds but we cannot argue the good results. I’m sure the neighbors wonder what I’m doing.
