Jennifer,
A little off topic (but since she was in the trash) be especially careful about bags in the garbage can. In the last year, there was a local story about a dog that suffocated by getting his head stuck in a potato chip bag. It was something that I never thought of as a danger. And, if she is truly compulsive might even pursue crumbs in a bag.
That's a good post.
And everything else, too, for a dumpster-diver: sharp edges on can lids, chocolate, fruit pits, cooked meat fat, and much more.
My granddogs (Border Terriers) learned to do this: the sister stands on the back of the brother and pulls stuff out to toss onto the floor for them both to enjoy.
That bit of ingenuity impelled me to start being very careful with trash and recycling. Anything attractive makes me take it straight out to the real dumpster. I can totally picture my dogs working out a way to get into the trash, and I am staying one step ahead of them.

... It is essential to use only unrefined, cold-pressed oils with high linolic acid content
I don't know what linolic acid is.
Maybe it was supposed to be linoleic or linolenic?

I don't know for sure what this means either: protein compounds of sulphuric content ... maybe the amino acids that contain sulfur?
If so, I can't think why whey (cottage cheese) would be richer in the sulfur amino acids than yogurt, but me not knowing it doesn't mean much.
Maybe there are lists of rich sources of the sulfur-amino-acids that are more detailed than "dairy products." I would have guessed that fermented dairy like yogurt would be at the top of the dairy products category for sulfur.
Very interesting! I wonder if there are progressions of the original 1950s research?

... I use an empty coffee can to keep all bones and whatnots contained until it is full, then I can throw it in the trash. It sits in the fridge so it doesn't stink. That way, Ms. Lucy isn't tempted to trash dive...she must be related to Nico... ...
What an excellent idea!

... Just trying to find ways to help Nico feel full and get the nutrition she needs while cutting down her cravings...I KNOW about compulsive cravings, they SUCK! ...
Me too. Before I learned about serotonin management without selective uptake inhibitors, I would sometimes (at a time of low levels of serotonin) feel desperate for refined carbs. Not at all an appetite thing: It did not have to be good-tasting or anything. I mean, plain bread would work. Awful awful compulsion.

I am currently looking through pages trying to find some actual information on the sulfur content of different foods. I'm still not sure I understand how the sulfur content makes the lipids water soluble.
Is it something about the whey protein?
Dairy products and eggs contain lecithin and casein which are emulsifiers, so blending any sort of dairy with an oil should theoretically help absorbtion rates if you need it to be water soluble.
I have no idea whether certain types of dairy have more or less of these compounds but I am searching to try and find out.
She can tolerate dairy without a problem, so cottage cheese is a fine option if I can make sense of the reason.
This also makes me wonder if eggs would make a good snack for her?
Is the grizzly salmon oil cold pressed? I would assume so since the amino acids would be affected by heat.

This is why I rip open any bags I throw away. I came home once to find her banging around the kitchen with her head stuck in a cat food bag.
I have also had a puppy get his head stuck in a plastic canister, that scared me!!
Anything like bones, the styrofoam that meat comes on, eggs shells go straight out to the outdoor trashcans. The coffee can in the fridge is a good idea!
P.S. Compulsive cravings really do suck, I can be a cracker/crouton/bread aholic!

I am an idiot.
The Phycox has MSM...if I remember right (I am at work right now), there is 400 mg of MSM (sulfur!)per lump.
So, stuff her phycox in some yogurt with her sardines, whirl the mess in a blender for a couple of minutes along with some fish oil (if you feel the need) and voila! protein, sulfur, oil mush for a hungry pup!
FYI, Hambone takes 2 lumps of Phycox a day.
Look! I DO fit in the bag. |

I didn't even know MSM was sulfur!
I got some sardines and some plain Kefir for her today.
I am still wondering about adding a lightly cooked egg to the mixture for more protein and fats.
Can I make enough of this ahead of time to last a couple of days do you think?
Raw eggs are a no go because of the gas.
