Robert/Dennis. just to clear the air a little. "I do not use the STAY COMMAND except in a NON WORKING atmosphere!
I do not use the term FREE for anything, as nothing is FREE. We use the term PLAY, that is the release word our dogs associate with doing what they want. They earn they play time.
YES!! I agree STAY is a WASTED COMMAND when working with a K-9. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />
OK Guys
Here is my to cents.
I use stay as my stand in motion command,as mentioned it is very close to the german word to stand. I do not use stay or any word for stay in schh. Sit or down means do it and dont move untill I say otherwise.
When walking out a door or some thing similar I say "wait there". Now If I tell my dog sit and walk out the door and look in the window in 5 min. he will be still sitting. If I say wait there
, He knows he can break when Im gone. Like this. How many times is your dog trying to go out the door withyou? If you stay him and you go to the store he will learn to break the command. So I taught " wait there" and he knows I dont intend for him to sit forever.
Aint it great! It all works. Just be consistant.
All of us do it OUR way and we all get the results
I got to tell you Jerry I am, if anything, a real world trainer.
The stay command is the most useful?
This debate may seem pointless to some but it shows how resistant we are about change especially concerning once accepted ‘general knowledge’ about dogs and how we train them.
I doubt there is a training person on this board who has not used the command of stay at some time in their training. As a dog loving culture we all grew up on the command stay and many still validate it as a useful command.
I don’t think the stay command is harmful but I will say a close examination of how it is used will result in being able to nullify it. The down means down and don’t change position unless directed to. The sit means sit and don’t change position unless directed to and so on.
Only place I can say the stay command would be even closely useful would be going someplace I don’t wish the dog to follow.
Example: My dog has muddy feet and I don’t wish them to enter the house with me until I can wash off the mud and dry them.
I could open the door and say STAY as in stay out.
Then again I could say NO as the dog moved forward to enter and have the same expectation.

In order to really enjoy a dog, one doesn't merely try to train him to be semi-human. The point of it is to open oneself to the possibility of becoming partly a dog. - Edward Hoagland
