Check with your local DNR before you start thinking of "selling" any wild game.
I assume some of this might be roadkill. Make sure of laws on that subject, too.
Even if all is legal, transport of wild game animals across state lines is another thing.

He's from Arkansas, you know... ( )
(probably has a still in his backyard, too...)
Wish I didn't live at the other end of the country; sounds like a great idea...

I'm lost. Sorry.
Just don't see alot of farmed pheasant and deer 'round here.
You've mentioned feeding roadkill in the past, and I hadn't heard of you hunting, so when I see "game" I think wild.
When I saw that you were thinking of selling stuff and the mention of shipping, I didn't know that had to stay inside state lines. My earlier assumption of some wild game was the reason for the mention of state lines.
My bad.

My bad. Oh. I see. I have gotten and fed deer before that someone hit w/their car and butchered. That's true. But it has nothing to do with this grinder situation. I don't hunt. Or butcher. Or drag roadkill into my car. It might screw up my nails. Here was my original post: I only would have limited capabilities for certain things since this would be a 2-person show, but I feel like I'd be a bit selfish not to pass this onto local dogs and cats whose owners want to feed TRUE WHOLE PREY. We were thinking chicken, rabbit, pheasant, cow, deer, etc.
I'm not talking about starting some fancy business- but if someone local wants to take a road trip and pick up some really really fresh ground truly whole raw food, this would be a great opportunity.
Like I said, the owner of the property and the grinder has 2 of the 3 necessary licenses already if we wanted to go public w/this, which I don't think we do. If we did, it's another $25 to get the third license. I think we are more interested in our own animals and helping out some friends who were interested.
There are lots of farmed pheasants and deer around here, not to mention rabbits, chickens, ostrich and quail. Last night I fed fresh ground ostrich. That grinder rocks; from ostrich to hamburger meat in a matter of seconds! The puppies nearly killed each other over this stuff, lol.
Randy was only joking about getting some from Chi-town to Maine. Shipping would be totally impractical and cost-prohibitive.

Uh-oh. I know I'm neurotic, but now I am wondering about how I feed my dog.
Is there a benefit to grinding up the meat/bone/other? I never feed her food ground.
Of course, there are some things with bones that she can't eat because the bone it too big (little dog) so I usually let her chew it and get the meat off for a while before taking it away.
Should I start having stuff like this all ground up?
Thanks.

Is there a benefit to grinding?
For you, or for the dog?
For you, yes. Ground food takes up less space because it fills the containers completely- unlike oddly shaped animal parts.
It can also be more convinient to feed, especially if someone else has to feed your dog for you.
For the dog, nope? You're actually giving up a few of the benefits of raw by grinding.
The only time grinding would make sense is if the dog was incapable of chewing/grinding/tearing the food itself.
It's a personal choice.

There is a benefit when the dog you're feeding is too small to easily get enough of all they need. A large dog can have chunks here and there of a large prey animal, or say an entire rabbit, but to devise a similar diet for cats or very small dogs is much trickier. Not impossible, but MUCH harder. Most cats won't chew bones, so grinding is the only way to get them to eat bone. You do need to add taurine if you grind for cats.
You can grind into very different consistencies, also, to maintain some of the benefits of feeding whole prey.
It's hard to throw a whole ostrich in a kennel or crate though, as it is with a deer, and often, you simply don't have the storage for whole animals, whereas, if you grind it coarsely you can have it in tubs, etc. Not as good as keeping it whole, but a hell of a lot better than a commercial diet.
