He's such a small dog that switching to regular raw would be quite cost effecive.
But several of the kibbles on the leerburg list have a grain-free variety (wellness, orijen, innova, prairie)that would be worth checking out. Prairie even makes frozen raw nuggets and patties that wouldn't cost too much to feed a small dog - probably 50 to 75 cents a day.
Well here's what I don't understand,
This dog has had this problem all summer you say. Well that's been about 3 months for crying out loud.
WHY hasn't this dog been to the vet?????!!!!!!!!

I think the mystery of this poor dog has been solved, fleas.

The vet will take a "scraping" -- either scraping off some skin cells with a dull blade or lifting them with something like sticky tape. ... You will want to write down everything for the vet visit -- where he itches, the fact that you found flea dirt, and the ragged ear-edges. ... The base of the tail may well be fleas alone -- the ragged ears need a scraping. The dog needs a vet visit.
JMO. Ragged ears are classic for ear mites and other parasites.
What I will do for Quincey is get him a grain free food, and put him on revolution, which is against fleas, ticks, ear parasites, worms. This should do the tric. and take him to vet.

Edit reason: forgot: , will also
Revolution always doesn't work against fleas. My dog was on revolution & still got fleas. Never saw fleas but found the fleas dirt & turned red when wet. The Vet gave capstar for 2 days & had to do a huge cleaning of the house. Itching stopped with in the 2 days & has mild itching now due to his allergies but that is being controled with grizzly salmon oil. He's totally off his prednisone & hydroxzine. So try the salmon oil & definately have him treated for fleas if you found flea dirt.
hi, I took Quincey to get ears out. The vet says they are ok. No inner ear mites. I didnt think to ask about other mites. When I got home, I called her back and said Q should also get a skin scraping. She said he did not. I know what Q hair usually looks like. She also said dogs sometimes have hair thing and changes in hair growth. I dont beleive her. What should I do. Go to a different vet for an opinion? I dont know if my vet will only do a skin scraping if there is an obvious bare patch or what.. It takes 2 1/2 years for Q hair to reach his chin from his ear.
Is he still itching all over, are his ears still ragged?
If yes then a second visit either with this vet or another one is in order.
And don't forget, you can ask for a skin scraping whether the vet thinks you need it or not, after all its your money!!
hi, he is not itching all over any more. I think it was the fleas and maybe food. In spots his hair is changing back into his puppy hair color he had when he was a puppy. That is a nice change after the grain free dog food switch. The hair has been slowly thining out and looking raged. Cant really say when it started.
