I don't think an asp baton would work well.
Lastly, an umbrella can sometimes help..... LMAO!
I get what you mean, but still....the visual.
I've only ran into 2 dogs that were serious and required more than posturing. Scary. If I'm gonna' shoot, swing, or spray it is with full intentions of carrying the altercation as far as possible.
With any type of force, if it is worth swinging, spraying, or shooting, it is worth shooting or hitting twice.
I really think that now, most of our bad dog encounters are avoided because the dogs can tell that I LOVE dog-fu.

The laws about offensive weapons are really tough - you have to prove that you have no intention of using an object as an offensive weapon. Hence the ball with the bat.

I'm sure there is offensive umbrellas you can find. James Bond always came up with one, in fact the KGB during the Cold War killed a dissident in London with Ricin on the umbrella tip

That'd work.
Rape alarms are handy too if you lob them really hard.

I have one of these, these are the only "umbrella's" that I'd depend on in a defensive situation.
Note: I have never actually used one in a defensive situation, so I can not vouch for their actual effect, but it'd be a lot better than a plain ol' umbrella.
Note number two: They're banned from the Nanny States, so ya'll would be back to square one as far as defending yourselves....

Here's what we're up against in California:
ASP's, batons, billy clubs, lead filled saps, sword canes and shortened sticks that are like billy clubs are all going to be illegal in California. The actual law is called "possession of a dangerous weapon". I think that it is either a high class misdemeanor or a low class felony (I'm not sure which). Anything that is made to strike with as its main purpose is going to be illegal, including the ASP on the link in your post. It is nice though. If you were going to take that risk you might as well carry a gun. That's only a misdemeanor in California.
The section regarding billy clubs is under section 12002 and 12020.

But, one of the things you could use would be a mid size flash light by Maglite or Stream Light. They're about the same size as a billy club and would work just as well. They're about $20 to $120 depending on what it's made out of, brand and whether it uses a bulb or an LED to shine light. Since you're looking to use it as a means of self defense first with maybe using it as a flash light second, I'd get the cheap one. The police can't say much about you having a flashlight in your vehicle.
The weird thing is, is that the animal control guys, which is now a division of the police department in this city, gives the advice to carry a walking stick when you walk your dog in case of an attack - they said, "you know, like Cesar does on his tv show". Well, how come that isn't illegal?

Lori,
Certain motorcycle gangs have taken to carrying a Maglight 4 D-cell flashlight as a weapon, as they are currently legal to carry, yet are still pretty fair impact weapons.
This might be worthwhile for you to look into...

In my experience a Maglight DOES make a great weapon They are a good, hefty weight and can take a hell of an impact I bet they would work well against a marauding dog too.
