Well I just got home a bit ago from dropping off my in law's Birthday cards, he's 32 today. The surgery went well and he is now the owner of a drain he'll be living with the next 5 days. He's breathing much better, is in a lot of pain, and is a little pissy which is better than hallucinating, in agony, and gasping for air which is where we were yesterday.
The surgery it seems for now was the right move. The crud in his lungs was starting to harden. The surgeon said if they hadn't done this we would have lost him within a week. We'll know in the next few days if this infection will be able to be knocked back by the current antibiotic cocktail he's on.
Take "One Day at a Time" or you will be overwhelmed. It sounds like he is getting great care...they did not wait to do the surgery, thank God. My thoughts & prayers are with you and your family.
Been thinking about you and your family a lot as well, Melissa - glad to hear there's been a good turn of events (post surgery), and here's hoping your BIL is definitely on the mend.
I'm turning 31 this December - I'm healthy, very fit, rarely get sick, and, perhaps fool-heartedly, I don't feel like H1N1 is at all a threat to me, beyond a few typical seasonal flu symptoms... your story has made me seriously consider the "worst case scenarios", and has definitely been a reality check. I still don't think I'll jump to be vaccinated, but I will drop some of my cynicism. Thanks for sharing your experience with this.
My nephew too was very ill with MRSA. He did not improve until they performed surgery and got into the root of the infection. His recovery from that point was quick. And it sounds like your b-i-l is on the same path. I have my fingers crossed for him.
My nephew did not have the flu; but plays high school sports and it is almost epidemic among young athletes in this neck of the woods very bizarre.
Kind of scary if it has something to do with the H1N1.
Here's hoping tomorrow is even better than today and normalcy will reign in the not so far future. My prayers are with you.

My in law is himself again according to my sister as of this morning. They also removed his chest tube this afternoon. Interesting process much in the way of starting a lawnmower.
The funny and interesting part is how much he doesn't remember of what happened. He met a couple people who have been taking care of him for the first time in his mind today who had in fact been taking care of him all week.
Things seem all around better today. We'll know more about the going home process tomorrow we hope.
