If you work with your dog on a reliable recall with increased distractions...there are many places that you will be able to take your dog to run without having to rely on only a dog park for a higher level exdercise. I take my dogs everywhere, sport fields, beaches, parks etc without any issues. But you need to get the recall reliable before you can have your dog loose without the aide of perminiter fencing like a DP has. JMO
Look for securely fenced places you can use. Various kinds of ball parks, some playgrounds, some churches...of course, you'll want to use them when no one else is there, and watch for posted signs (if they say no dogs, I obey), but I've been able to find a various fenced areas to borrow, over time.
It goes without saying to be religious about picking up after your dog if you do find such places to use<g>.
When she gets lots of exercise she is no problem. I need the dog park environment for her to run and play and ware herself out. I'm 62, running or biking for me is out.
Betty,
I feel your pain Any chance of setting up a treadmill to rid her of excess energy while you work on a solid recall?
This is strictly opinion and one of the reasons I went from dog park fan to neutral; I think the environment of dog parks does something to a dog's psyche. Dogs are meant to be social but I think running and playing with multiple random dogs, goes against their nature to form pack oriented relationships. Poor babies don't have our human ability to be shallow And maybe that is one of the reasons Luna doesn't come when she is there.....because she is overwhelmed and no creature can learn when they are in an overwhelmed state of mind.
