				Walter,
Have you ever owned/handled a working line dog of any breed?

Almost any dog can be trained to alert bark.

No, I never own or handle any working line dog. I knew that almost any dog can be trained to bark in command BUT GSD is the only dog I will own, base on their loyalty, handsome looking and intelligence.

Walter, you do understand that it will be AT LEAST 2 years or more, before your pup will be in a position of training & maturity to do any level of protecting you or your family? You would be safer & better off getting a firearm & getting proper firearm training if you are concerned about the crime rate that is present in your city.

I agree with you, Walter, firearms in the home are not the answer to crime in the world around us. But, neither is a dog. Your children want a dog to play with, and you are a dog lover. It sounds to me like you want a companion dog (who happens to scare the heck out of anyone who is uninvited to your property). Just be aware that the dog you have put a deposit on already may be hard, this is what people are telling you. You need to be prepared, if you want to be successful. Start with the "Your Puppy 8 weeks to 8 months" DVD from Leerburg. |

Walter, if you believe all that you see on u-tube, you have alot to learn. You start the very BASIC foundation work(imprinting)with a puppy. It takes at least a couple of years of specific, planned levels of training with knowledgable helpers to bring up a pup for protection work. Lots of obedience, environmental exposure etc. It takes a good deal of time & dedication to do this. To rush a dog before it is ready for the next stage along the way...is the fast track to ruining the dog. I believe that you are getting in WAY over your head on this. JMO

I think a large, dark-colored, imposing LOOKING dog w/a deep bark would do the trick, Walter.

While I hate to agree with Steve and ruin my image, he's right.

Motherhoods done you a world of good, congratulations. Lol.
Hey Walter, take a look at some of the threads here about dogs and kids. Immediately looking at this puppy as a playmate for your kids could lead to problems. Marcia raises a good point about guns in the house too. I think you're usually safer there. Where you really need them is out in public. Thats probably where you'll face the most crime.

				Walter,
You say you've had dogs in the past if I take the statement,'never an inside dog before'. Did you find any of those dogs lacking in loyalty or intelligence?
While it's true there are some dog breeds more independent of man than others, dogs for the most part very loyal and all of them are intelligent.
If only man were so.

You ask why you should find and start with a trainer now.
I'm sorry to be blunt about this Walter but the reason you need a trainer now is because you have absolutely no concept of what you're about to get yourself or the dog into. And your answers here so far have told me much about a breeder of working dogs who would even consider taking a deposit from you.
Your expectations are unrealistic for the dog, not to mention your lack of experience for the type of dog it'd take to meet those expectations.
You're not willing to take an active part in your own or your family's defense with a gun, but expect an animal of limited generalized intelligence to do so for you!!! Well at least the gun only goes off when it's told to. Dogs aren't like that Walter, they can go off at any time. Seemingly for no reason. Especially when they've been trained to be reactive, and more so if they've been poorly trained or handled.

I think you should reassess the whats and whys you want a dog.....Any dog.
