We don´t let the dogs in the bed but they can be on the couch (and the dachshunds fit on chairs as well so they are allowed on the ones out of the kitchen and they know it). My dobie slept in the bed before I had a man that needed the space next to me (men are not known for their willingness to sleep on feet at night). For some time the dogs slept near our legs but before we had a baby they were forced to move to the crate. Besides I like to look at least a mostly hair-free sheet when I pull the blanket off and that is not going to happen with dogs sleeping there.
Thanks for all the input....I like these responses a little more than the ones that passive aggressively (or just aggresively) inform me that if I DO NOT let my pets on the bed I'm clearly an abusive owner who inflicts horrible abuse towards my animals...the other forum tends to be a little bit... anthropomorphizingseriously...they all have "furry kids" over there....I joke around and let my mother call my guy her "granddog" (she knows she's never gettin' grandkids lol) but these people can be insane (don't even get me started on the "has your dog ever bit someone?" thread....)
It seems that for now my guy will have limited bed access...and he stopped a robbery in my downstairs neighbor's apartment last night because he was sleeping in my bed (my bed is by my window which is right over there's)...so now of course I feel safer with him and he's warm so...all natural heating pad! He's continuing to obey all the rules and he's the type of dog who will test everyone else but really doesn't try it on me
I agree with that. My Dog Bindi can get on the bed with me every other night. When I go to bed, she lays facing me for awhile and I pet her and tell her what a great dog she is. BUt she knows as soon as my husband comes to bed, she is to get off. So now, when he comes out of the bathroom she immediately jumps off and goes to her crate. So, we have had no problems. The other dogs don't come on my bed, because when all three are there they love to play and rassle and they want to include me.
Dogs are the best aren't they?
Maya can get on the couch with permission. I've gone through phases with the couch--she brings in dirt and can smell doggy, but sometimes it's so nice to have her by my feet! She is very good at asking if she can get on the couch--she sits politely, looks at the couch, looks at me, repeats.
When she was younger, she started sneaking up on the bed in the middle of the night. I thought it was funny at first, but then she would stretch and take up my space and sometimes wake me up when sneaking up. One morning, I awoke to her standing over me, trying to wake me up, and when I told her to scoot, she sat down on my stomach! I knew things had to change. It only took two times of me throwing her off after sneaking up and saying a firm "no" to end that. That experience demonstrated to me how furniture can play into dominance issues for some dogs.
My previous dog (best dog EVER), would hop in to bed every morning when my husband got up--he always gets up 1/2 hour before I do. We would snuggle while I was waking up. (and her butt was on his pillow!!) But, they had a special relationship that was different from my relationship to her. They played together (running, skiing, etc.) She was my buddy who was always underfoot.....I miss her.
