I have 6 dogs and I use a small metal trash can with a tight-fitting lid and lined with a black plastic garbage bag. It works well and doesn't retain smells. I empty it once a week to keep the odor at a minimum (and that's generally when it's full). I noticed a distinct difference in the odor when I fed kibble vs. now that I feed raw. The raw fed dog poop isn't anywhere near as stinky.
Most plastic cans are probably porous and the smells can permiate them. I have a 5gal or so galvanised metal can and like Konnie, never seem to have any escaping odor.
