Our city ordinance allows for hens, but no roosters. Which if fine by me.
I'm trying to change our town ordinance to allow for an increase in my flock size, but apparently I'm going to have to run for mayor to get this done.
So, my "More chickens in your backyard now!" platform is up and running......and yes, I'm actually serious about this.

Way to go Will! Are we going to have to kiss your ring or anything?

Oh yeah! What breed did you order? What size coop and run are you planning??
As with my dogs, I'm of the "one-of-each" mentality! I want to learn about lots of different kinds, so I ordered a variety of chicken breeds, all selected for egg-laying/non-sitting and a docile temperament. I ordered a couple different colors of Wyandottes and Rocks, a New Hampshire, a Welsummer, an Australorpe, and an Amerucana. My coop is (will be) 6x6 and the attached run 6x18.

Both of my Arucanas are completely wild and nuts, despite having been hand-raised from a few days old. My New Hampshire is so-so, and will allow us to approach and handle her grudgingly.
Our favorite is a mix of Rock and some random white breed and she is a delight! She follows you around, loves to be petted, handled, hand-fed. And the size of the eggs she throws are astounding! She's awesome. Its too bad I can't remember the other breed she's mixed with.

Here is a link to a photo of my broody hen, Champagne, and the litte monster she hatched on Dec. 16. I'll have to get another pic of the baby - he now looks NOTHING like this cute little fluff ball!!

I have a mix of Barred Rocks (one of my favorites), Delaware Giants, Rhode Island Reds and a few which hatched from a "barnyard mix" - including Champagne. I've been told she is a black sex link, but can't confirm or deny that one. The Barred Rocks are by far the most curious and friendly, as is Champagne. The RIR are my least favorite, but they are laying well and dependably, but are not as friendly. To be fair, they have not been handled as much as the first batch I hatched, so that could be partly why. The RIR roosters are beautiful birds - very much so, but I am not impressed with their temperments or their "roo factor" - not a single one of the five which hatched together has stepped up to the plate to assume the position of taking care of the gals... hence, there is a stew pot with each of their faces on the side!
