I don't live where I walk my dogs in public as much as I used to ....now I have to drive down to town to do any sidewalk work. Anyway, I had a client family at the kennel this weekend with two GSDs both black and red. They looked at the gorgeous (in my mind) sable male next to theirs and asked if he was purebred. They didn't know they came in that "color".
I constantly get asked if my Brussels Griffon is a Shih Tzu mix.....usually pronouncing it Shit Soo. And basing it all on her pushed in face. I always wonder mixed with WHAT?
My neighbor, old redneck coonhound man, once asked me if Basher (the Bullmastiff in my sig) was a Plott hound.
I spent a summer in my teens with friends doing obedience ring competition with their two dobermans. Walking the 50# B/R female and the 100# Red male I constantly got asked if they would bite....my answer was always, "Depends on what you do" Not many folks wanted to pet them after that.

I had a guy tell me my rotty looked hungry. I thought he meant skinny at first (which she is not, if anything she could drop a pound.) so ask him why he thought that, and apparently he meant she looked fierce. I thought it was an odd comment, i guess he thought she wanted to eat him or something. I looked at her she wasn't even looking at him and she was completely relaxed. I thought it was very odd comment. maybe he just tried to think about something to say about my dog, who knows?

Well besides the usual stupid comments about being long haired chihuahuas and poms I do occasionally get asked what the breed is and when I say papillon the next question is "what's that a mix of?"
My lab on occasion has been thought to be a pit as well because she's a show style vs field style dog which people aren't used to.
Then there are the "is that a dog?" or my personal favorite "Get a real dog, looks like a snack, being a squeek toy, your dog looks like a kitty" garbage.

I imagine it was clever once. But at the 60th or so time it might feel a little like the dane owners who hear about their dog being a horse.

Having dogs ranging from 4# to 100# I get the 'get a real dog" comments sometimes. I remind them that they have a 'little' brother who is 100#......
I have to say I was once an exclusively big dog person, a fact several friends love to tease me about even now....five years after my first hypoglycemic toy rescue.
I do remind people and dogs that "toy" is NOT meant that way! And certainly small dogs are a really different sort of dog. But we just call them our "auxillary backup dogs" (not ankle biters, barks with hair on them, barking dust bunnies)They wake up the rhodesian so he can look imposing. Last 'generation' the Westie woke up the Bullmastiffs.
I do think that 3/4 of a small dogs rep is caused by the owner. Though some are entirely on the earth to be lap warmers, any with nasty or unstable temperaments are often owner created.

I get that one all the time, and I have a Dobe not a Dane. It's very old, and can only imagine what it's like to hear it as frequently as a Dane owner must.
My 5'10" daughter never gets the 'horse' comment when she walks the dog, so I suspect he just looks much larger walking next to me.

Question 1: are you a dog walker?
No, they're all mine.
Question 2: which one is the Alpha?
I am.
