Dog shampoos and conditioners have come such a long way since back in "the day". Use a quality shampoo and conditioner and you really can bathe your dog daily. I like Double K products because a gallon of shampoo would last a lifetime (it dilutes like 52:1) and does a fantastic job but a lot of people I know swear by Vellus and other premium names.
Really the only thing I will say is conditioners do soften wirecoated dogs. Otherwise no... bathe away.
eta I bathe my dogs usually 1-3 times a week. 2 quick shampoos then conditioner. Towel dry.

I also wash their bedding several times a week since I'm allergic to dogs. Between a good diet, regular brushing and washing their bedding (and vaccuuming obssessively - no fleas either :-) ) I haven't had a doggie odor issue in years. And I hardly bathe mine anymore. Maybe two or three times a year now, along with regular sprinkler playtimes.

Good Lisa, I think it is the wet coat that I don't dry off too good that is causing a clash in thinking. Dan

A few weeks ago when I dropped Lulu and left her at the vet's most of the day to be observed, she came home smelling like she'd been given a bath. Last week for her second series of shots I asked if they'd used a dry shampoo on her or something. No. But since there are three female vets she figured it must have been a combination of all their colognes on a very pampered pup.
Where I work the dog smell is super intense on rainy days (which, as you know Dan, we haven't had many lately here in NC). So not getting Chico dry could be a factor. I bought a High Velocity dryer for Lulu when she gets bigger. I'm afraid it would blow her across the room right now. You might look into one of these...http://leerburg.com/1155.htm

Blow across the room, I might have some use for that. Yes Mariellena, I suspected the wet coat all along, even with my other dogs. To me is OK, but to have my dog around certain parts of the house, I have to do a better job. I will look into to that product, Thanks. Dan

I hate doggie odor, especially when it comes from my own dogs!
WE feed raw, and have been for twelve years, and all are quite healthy... But we still get dog odor, not as bad, but to a person with OCD, it is enough.
Keeping the environment clean is a big one. Like Melissa said, dead hair traps funk. We also wipe all crate surfaces and wash bedding twice a week. These things REALLY keep the stink to a minimum.
I have no problem bathing regularly; about once or twice a month unless there is reason to do so more. Their skin is clear and healthy, no flakes and no itches.
Another thing I do daily is wipe down with baby wipes. I use the "moisturizing" or "cooling/soothing" type (for no other reason than I like the smell of them, and wipe the dog from nose to tail with as many as it takes to have them come back clean, usually five per dog. They love it and think of it as extra loving time, and I get any extra loose hair off and a clean dog.
As I have clients come to my home for appointments (Realtor)I don't want them to EVER guess I have dogs and cats, and none do unless I tell them so. Smell goes a long way with first impressions...

They have them for dogs, too, but I get the cheap store-brand unscented baby ones.
I like them for cleaning off pollen and other allergens before the dog comes in to his bed and the carpet after being in grass, woods, etc.
