if i get eaten by my dog in 2 years time i will definately write everyone personally saying "i shoulda listened to ya's way back then..if only", and end up on Ed's page with all the owner gets bitten by dog stories/pics.
Oh... there's a 50/50 chance it won't be you that gets ripped up.
It'll be some other poor SOB that didn't do a damned thing to deserve it.
Just my personal experience, I can not see how you could possible train a protection dog without the assistance of a club or proffessional trainer. Just to do basic obedience and some agility/cute tricks I had to draft my kids. I've seen Dutchies at the club and if I had the time and resources they are on the wish list but as it stands now my two UberHunds are enough. If you really want to start training really drivy dogs I'd go to a GSD breeder and select a nice "mild" female like my Erika. Drivy enough to engage a decoy in defense and fearless and the prey drive enough to whip thru obedience and agility smartly but also the willingness to please.....most of the time
wow i feel like a naughty kid being caught out at something - OK
1. i do appreciatte all advice you all have been saying and the time people put in bothering to reply to someone they will never know or derive finacial or other profit from so thanks all.
2. trying to tease out more info from different sources does not imply i have discredited or am not listening, its just the way many new learners gain a wider perspective and see patterns of prevailing opinion etc.
3. i will put on hold any adventures into PPD training untill i have attended & completed several training courses with reputable pro trainers over minimum 2/3 year cycle.
4. i will develop my pups drive through tracking, & agilty training before anything else + get a basic recognised title in some obedience event - i have no interest in competition obedience, i have been to some shows as a spectator and thought it was pointless & degrading to the dog, the dogs looked as sad as their owners/handlers - yuck to competition obedience and the show ring, not buying into that world never, its crueler to a dog than hunting wild dangerous game (my opinion).
5. what on earth is a "UberHunds" should i google that?
6. when i mentioned consequences i implied dog and me as one thing.
there you have it - i am listening and am not a knuckle-head, have put the the PPD adventure on ice for minimum 2/3 years untill adequetly prepared and skilled if ever. thats as responsible dog owner as it gets.
Yeah Dennis,
You're right, I haven't put as much thought or reading into this thread as I might have if it wasn't just so wrong to begin with.
A green hand taking on a something of a suspect line of Dutchie who wants a dog for sport that posts in the protection forum who doesn't want protection buying from some one who uses them for security that isn't a trainer but has dogs that temperament wise are between a GSD and a Mal because GSD's or Mals aren't enough dog who has nothing to gain by selling the dog to some one that has no idea even what a Dutchie is suppose to be.
UGH, I'm confused.
Maybe I should write to the KNPV and ask them what they expect from a dog.
