Good for you! I echo all the thanks for your service to our country. What are your plans now that you have the honorable discharge?

I plan to start school in the fall, with the goal of obtaining a Masters in Social Work.
I'd like to work with returning Combat Vets. I don't think there are nearly enough Veterans actually providing services for Vets.
Sometimes that creates a serious disconnect, and prevents a Vet from getting what he really needs, because he has an inherent distrust of non-military people.

This should also satisfy Lucille's curiosity about what a "unique" guy I am.
Someone wrote me a couple days ago and clued me in. I said to them, as I am saying to you now, that I think it is awesome that you have taken the time and effort to make your life the way you want it.
I am happy for you and hope your changes exceed your expectations.

Aaron,
I am so happy for you! I wish things were different in our country and that you could instead finish out your career in the military, but your career plans signify you will continue serving our country. Thank you for your service!
I must confess to having been confused over the name change thing, but also, that it was NOMB...it's nice to have that little mystery solved<g>.
I know life is never smooth sailing for any of us, but I sure wish you much smoother sailing from here on out.

Good for you to have the courage to become your true self.
The vets will be lucky to have your input.
Your dog looks terrific, shining coat, full of power.

I've been hoping and hoping that the Honorable Discharge was not going to be affected, and I am so glad for you that I have happy tears.
Can't top that sentiment. Congratulations!

Wow Aaron, that‘s great. Many people go through life never really knowing who they are or what they want. You’re already quite an accomplished man at a very young age.
As well, thank you for your past and future continuing service. Although in Canada, I look to you guys as our human PPD’s. I can’t imagine where we’d be without our big brother neighbor growling at those who would choose to harm us.
Congratulations and best of luck in your future plans.

Aaron,
Double congratulations on these two wonderful milestones in your life. Thank you for your service to our country--and for your service to the LGBT community. Your openness, honesty, and example help all of us continue to show the rest of the world that those of us who aren't part of the gender/identity majority can be ordinary people that have lots of things in common with people if they just get a chance to know us.
I'm a gay man--and while I know you and I are probably not very much alike, we are lumped together into the community of "others"--the "LGBT." I certainly can't know everything you've dealt with, but I think I understand a little of it. I'm very proud of you. And, sincerely, thank you. Your honesty has helped others, including me, whether you intended to or not.
I wish you all the best.

That sounds like a great idea. I have a friend who is married to an Afghanistan veteran and he has PTSD that caused him to get into a bit of legal trouble. Luckily one of my other friends is a great attorney who was a reservist for a long time (might have been full time military as well but I forgot) and she takes many veteran cases such as his pro bono as she understands some of what these individuals are going through.
Good luck with your schooling!

I have read that the suicide rate among returning vets from the middle east is among the highest following any war in our history. They certainly need the support, and you will have instant cred with 8 years of service yourself, Aaron. Maybe you can find a way to weave a dog into some rehab plans. There are so many shelter pups out there with backgrounds not all that dissimilar to being in a war.
In any event, good luck and awesome choice of a life mission, IMO.
