Thanks EVERYONE!!
I have read the book Raw Dog Food by Carina Beth McDonald and am currently reading Natural Nutrition for Dogs and Cats.
What are the best RMB's out there for puppies to start with? I thought maybe chicken necks?
I have the Salmon Oil and the Vitamin E oil, and he gets a fish capsule too. I had cut back on everything but now I am intoducing the Vitamins again, along with the Salmon Oil. He seems alot happier, and has never lost his energy this whole time, and I am still feeding 4 small meals per day until I am convinced that all has cleared up! He is still eating cooked chicken with a little rice and yogurt and a little pumpkin, but things are turning around, and I will start weaning him off the pumpkin and yogurt when I can get his chicken necks. I thought about following the LB diet for puppies, and moving on from there.
Chicken backs ... are great. Didn't you say you could get them from friends? Skin them the first couple of meals.
Have a few days' worth of log poops before the switch, and make the first couple of one-item meals small until you see the poop.
What vitamins (exactly)?
You mention fish capsules and salmon oil -- same thing (fish oil).
When you intro the fish oil and E to the raw diet, you will go by weight. THe fish oil is about a gram (1000 mg) per ten pounds of dog, and the E is a 50 to 100 IU capsule for a puppy for now.
You mentioned kelp and alfalfa -- they too are added in gradually as you progress.

Work on food, salmon oil, and vit. E.
Nothing else for right now. I seriously doubt that kelp, alfalfa, vitamins, or any other supplements are going to hurt the switch, but why complicate things for a pup with a history of GI upset.
Keep it simple, and add extracurricular *stuff* when she is 100% on her diet.

Connie-
I will get backs IF I can get them from the local farmers, and I am working on getting necks too. We are a rural town, so I am working on all the angles.
The "vitamins" I mentioned are JUST the E(200 IU)/Salmon from LB-one pump on his food-/and Fish(the store bought gelcaps). Sorry for the misinformation.
Thanks for replying, Connie and Michael

There are several.
By "commercial," do you mean kibble, canned, pre-made (frozen) raw, or dehydrated?

Fish oil is a fat, of course. I know what you meant, though: "vitamins" meaning "supplements."
My choice of beginner RMBs is backs rather than necks.

If you can't get backs, you can use other parts.
Just tell us what you can get and we can tell you how to start with more easily digestible RMBs for the beginner (and of course, anything not used immediately can be frozen for later).

Connie-
It looks like I won't be able to get backs for right now, and I was wondering what else can be used??
The Puppy food my friend was interested in is called Wellness? Any info on that?
No other "supplements" are being used right now, but the kelp and alfalfa will be introduced later.
Have you ever heard of Hokamix? It is a powder that contains plants and herbs. You just add it to the food, I guess.

Hi, Melisa,
I see you started a new thread about Wellness so we won't address it in this thread too.
Can you link us to Hokamix?
You can use whole birds, either butchered by you or bought quartered, or you can use what are billed as "Rock Cornish hens" (small chickens), or you can buy breast quarters and slice off a slice for people-food, or thighs ....
You might want to stop in at your supermarket or butcher shop, BTW, and ask. I never find chicken backs without asking. (Remember, every chicken has one! lol)
But whatever you find that looks reasonable can be used. Just tell us what you can get.
What is available for a reasonable price?
