IF we the people HAD allowed an Islamic sect to pray on our capital steps while denying another religon, then you'd certainly have a bitch.
Spectulating on what would have/might have happened when it didn't serves no useful purpose in this case.
Okay, how about a group of middle school students taken to a mosque to study it's "architecture", then the girls are separated from the boys and the boys get the "opportunity" to bow and told “You have to believe in Allah, and Allah is the one God, the only one worthy of worship, all forgiving, all merciful." Does this bug you at all?

Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf has been interviewed by CNN and was openly supportive of terrorist organizations and blamed the Taliban and OBL on the US. To Rauf, they exist because of the USA. Screw him and the rug he prays on

Oh yes they are, but only because a parent filmed it and made it public. Those pesky facts keep getting in the way, don't they?
I hope this thread does not get locked - it is worthy of discussion, even if a bit "heated".

Maybe it's the gift of proximity but I don't care if a mosque goes up in NYC, I don't care for that matter if it goes up across the street from my house just like I wouldn't care if any other religion did the same thing. This is America, your religion doesn't matter, it's the individual who decides to interpret their religion as permission to act against other people who think differently than the way they do that I take issue with. Then that person is just wrong no matter what kind of labeling you want to put on it and should be dealt with accordingly.
I'm not afraid, I'm not angry, and I believe my country and its core values can survive this age of terrorism if we choose to ignore those who would profit from the hysterics on both sides and deal with those individuals who would harm others or incite other people to it.

A lot of stupid stuff happens on field trips to a lot of places. It's the nature of things that stupid stuff that's probably not ok in public school will happen once you get off campus, you just deal with it as it pops up. I remember this one time a preacher came in before an away varsity game for a group prayer with the team. Man, that was pretty stupid too but it wasn't the end of the world. I'm sure it won't happen again.

Good grief. Were the girls taken off the field? Were the boys told to only worship this one God?
And let me add what I told my husband what I said the night I heard about this story...
IF this had been a field trip about different religions (not about architecture) and they had visited a church, mosque, temple, etc, etc.. and ALL students had a few minutes to experience how each faith practiced their faith - GREAT. PERFECT. Education vs indoctrination... makes ALL the difference. JMHO.

I'm for leaving it up for the good people of NYC to make the decision, but IMHO if they are allowed to build a mosque then we should be allowed to build a church synagogue or Hindu temple within a few miles The Kaaba. They have churches and synagogues within walking distance from Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem, we can see how well that turned out.

Middle school children, Melissa. Not high school. And either way, we are not talking about adults.
Plus, the experience was not offered to all... YOU would have been removed from the experience. (What would you have learned from THAT experience, at 13 years of age?)
As an adult, it is easy to look at this and say "no big deal".
As a child, being influenced by an adult/authority figure/teacher, it is a huge deal, in my opinion. Especially when I would not have been allowed to participate...
Adults understand the difference between learning about a different theology and being able to assertain if that is what you personally believe and wish to adopt as your own theology.
Children only absorb what is fed to them, without the ability to determine "is this really what I believe, based on my experiences and education?"...
I know I would NOT have wanted my daughter, in middle school, withought my knowledge, exposed to this type of "education". You might be fine with that. We will have to agree to disagree on this.
