This is a problem that I've never encountered before though which is why I was asking for help.
The problem that you have never encountered before would seem to be a natural result of this:
"I don't know what he used for flooring indoors (pee pads, newspaper, etc?) He also had puppy crates that they stayed in at night (two story crate with a wire bottom so any waste would fall through)."
This is why you are receiving so much advice to reinforce outdoor potty and not allow this early-ingrained habit (that was instilled at the breeder's, based on this description) to gain any further momentum.
I really appreciate everyone's advice and I will definitely be trying some different things to see what works. So far today he hasn't peed in his crate at all so I'm hopeful that we will have an accident free night as well. Thanks again and keep your fingers crossed for us
