I'll just have to read the handbook faster, since the moon shines directly through my window and onto his crate... and is to the left of the mountain, but only by 10 degrees!
You've seen the movie Gremlin's, right?
that 10 degree's has the same effect as it did on Gizmo if you fed him after midnight!
Phaedra, is it possible the food switch was too soon?
You said you did it over a day & a half?
Are all his morning poops good and only the afternoon ones runny?
sorry, im trying to remember everything...but it's just too much sometimes!!!

Hi Wendy,
Yes, all his morning poops are good. In fact, this morning his poop was pretty solid, broken up into multiple logs. So, we'll see how it progresses through the day. Yesterday was his first full day on boiled water, less food, and 1 spoon of pumpkin.
I know the food change seems fast, but not sure if you caught - the original food isn't available in my town.

sounds like the amount was the culprit...im sure he'll sort himself out in no time!

Good news! He just had he 2nd formed poop of the day, granted it was softer than the 1st.
Bad news - it was in his x-pen, with no notice at all. He's never had an accident and always cries to go out. Plus, we go out all the time, since I am off work... I guess it could just be a coincidence, or perhaps he didn't ask to go out because he didn't feel the urgency of diarrhea? I dunno?

IMO pups have no clue about pooping in the first couple of weeks. He has to go, he goes. Peeing too. He doesn't think it's a accident. He thinks it's a very nice turd that smells like him and he feels better now, post pooping.
He may not know that pooping is anything we care about yet.

Hang in there. The first week is the most difficult...with both of you getting used to each other & getting a schedule going etc. It will get better, soon.

I just don't want him to feel bad. For the first time today, he sat contently with me for quite some time (as opposed to wriggling and biting) and fell asleep in my lap! Now when he cries, sometimes all he wants is to be picked up and he just rests his head on my shoulder... so sweet. Having said that, he already managed to bend part of the x-pen while throwing a fit (which I was trying desperately to ignore).
Thanks for the support, everyone. I'm glad that his poops are getting better.
We also had a very productive marker session today, because he is more hungry overall.
I always had hungry adult dogs in the past, and didn't worry about it, but I guess I just didn't want the baby to be hungry - and overdid it. I'm glad that I asked here right away, instead of continuing on and waiting it out!

How was his poop tonight?
PS
There are really two ways to switch foods with a dog who is not used to a lot of variety: the usual add-a-little-new-food-to-old-food, increasing the new and decreasing the old, and also giving very small meals (gradually increasing) with the new food for a couple of days.
If you know the dog, then the tiny amount of new food can be fluffed up with a food you know he tolerates well. For example, my dogs are very accustomed to plain yogurt. If I fed one kibble for a while and then wanted to switch this way, I could make up some of the meal size with yogurt. (But of course this has to be a food that you know the dog does well on, so you don't end up with diarrhea that's completely unrelated to the new food. )

I'm glad he has a sweet side. I'm still waiting for that.
My next dog(if I live long enough) is going to be --- sweeter.

Well, he's actually only pooped twice today. I thought for sure he would go during our last outdoor play session, but he was more interested in practicing his leg bites!
It's only 5pm here though, so I will take him out in a bit. I was thinking that maybe something on his bully stick could be upsetting his stomach? He doesn't actually swallow any of it, but I was desperate to buy one, and could only find one from Brazil. I got him a puppy nylabone keyring today, which he really likes, and will take the bully stick away for now.
One thing I guess I didn't mention, but I really noticed in it's absence today, is that he had a lot of gas before ... and I don't think I've noticed any farting action so far today!
