Laurel,
I have a friend that is very active in Malanois rescue and she is here in North Florida. If you want I can give you her email addy.
Rescue dogs have often gotten such a bum deal in life to start with that I think it's really important that when they leave a rescue it is truly for their forever home and that it is a true match.
She may be able to talk to the rescue for you and find out a little more information or just let you know what questions to ask.

Laurel- kudos for considering taking in a rescue dog and doing some research.
If I were to ever take in a rescue, I most certainly would pool all my trainer resources in my area and get their help and input from day one. I'd also follow Ed's advice on bringing in a new dog to your home~ that is, kennel it, teach it from the get-go that you are it's master and in charge of it's world- when it eats, goes out, plays, sleeps, etc. If you haven't reviewed Ed's e-book on this I would definately recommend it.
I have fostered dogs from our animal shelter and I also have a couple of my own dogs and I know that some of those dogs are not the same when they are taken into a different environment. This can be the same deal for re-homing a rescue.
Good luck!

Thanks for all the replies everyone. But I'm kind of stumped. With all that could be wrong I don't know if it would be worth it to check it out anymore. I did find a trainer advertised in the area of the dog who could probably give me a good eval.
Betty, does your friend in the rescue have any Mals right now that might fit what I need (more laid-back, etc..?)
And also, I have Ed's Basic Obedience Vid and was planning on running through the whole groundwork program.
I think I'm just going to go ahead and pass on this dog. Unless you guys think it might be an ok idea to foster him for a trial period or something like that?

Would they let you try him for a bit? That seems like the perfect answer.

If you want laid back, why do you want a Mal? I would pass Laurel. Get a dog to enjoy, not one to worry about. Its one thing to end up with a headache, but don't go looking for one.

If this is your first dog (ever?) of your own, and you want one that is laid back, I would not recommend a Mal or high drive GSD. However, there are tons of GSD's & GSD crosses in rescues out there, that make great companions, and probably have the temperament you are looking for.
I know you've been looking for a while, but here's a great place to start, for young adult, GSD and GSD crosses at rescues in your area.

Do you mean "laid back" or "laid back Mal"? Two very different things IMO.
I have three working line GSDs, all of variable intensity...so they are definitely out there. I wouldn't touch a Mal, because I know I couldn't do it right with all I have going on in life. When acquiring my last puppy a few months ago, I took the lowest drive in the litter on purpose and he is a great fit in our lifestyle. Also, his drive fits nicely between my other dogs (one is super high drive and the other is getting older). However, he is my husband's first dog and even though hubby tries his best, it is obvious that the lack of experience is an issue.

Oh yeah, I did mean laid-back Mal, I was hoping for one that had the ability to chill out.
I haven't contacted the rescue any more since I started this topic, so I don't know if they would work with a trial period but I don't think I'll be picking him up anyway.
I guess its back to the drawing board? Anyone know of any good GSDs or Mals that would be a good fit that need a home?

Laurel, you need to realistically ascess your training skills & experience & lifestyle etc & look for a dog that mataches that ability. It is not fun to get in over your head. So doing this will help you know what to look for.
It never hurts to have someone lined up to train with or even go with you to check out a dog you think might be right.
Laid-back can mean different things to differnt people. What may seem laid back to me might be off the wall to someone else. Things that I can live with, may make someone else nuts.
Rescues add an additional dimension to training, since you don't always know what 'issues' you may encounter.
Good luck, & take your time...the right one will come along.

I just saw an awesome working dog on a German Shepherd rescue site.
But as Anne outlined, really take your time ... a dog is an incredible long term committment; but you will find the one for you!!!
