Pyrantel pomanate is the "plus" part in heartgard plus. Millions of dogs get it on a monthly basis and do just fine - the risk of side effects is super low. As far as chemical go, well, as much as I like to minimize their use there certainly is a place for them. For instance I'd MUCH rather use heartworm drugs than deal with the actual heartworm in my dogs.

So, the way to know for sure is the fecal testing? As bob suggests?
MY dog has had some "strange" looking BMs. I tested a nasty looking movement ABOUT a year ago? Came back clean.
Should i be having my girl checked more often?
Theres no other signs of worms in general, that i could keep an eye on?
My dog goes to the vet about monthly and they never recommend fecal tests. I bring them in on my own.
Some people deworm regularly. My dog has NEVER been dewormed.
Should i be? My vets dont let me know a thing about this subject.
As connie says, i do to try to stay as natural as possible also. Because you can clearly see a difference in my poor dog.
Can a dog get pinworms? Will they give them to me? Ohhhhhh..
Can a dog give a human anything like that?

Equine dewormer combo with ivermecton is about as lethal as you can get. The ivermecton dosage is about 100x more than the dog can handle. If you dose appropriately for the fenbendazole in dogs, you are OD'ing the dog on ivomec, guaranteed.

Little children who play barefoot in the deep south in dirty lots with dog poo have been known the have something called "visceral larval migrans" which is hookworm larva burrowing thru the skin. Toxocara canis the roundworm has RARELY RARELY migrated into the eye.
THIS IS NOT GOING TO HAPPEN so don't worry about it. If you treat your dogs for heartworm you've probably got it all covered.

nononononononoon! No nonon!
There is no way i can be positive each dog that comes into my house is on HW protection at that exact moment...
Sure the dogs i am around are tested negative for HW... but what about these other nasties?!!
Maybe i should reconsider my career choices...
Any careers out there completely safe from all viruses/worms/bugs?
Betty.....
Why did you have to tell me?
In the eyes?!!!

In south LA, we have a proliferation of pests, including heartworm-bearing mosquitoes and, of course, serious fleas. Because of these, prevention is a must. Under these rather extreme conditions, I have found that what works best for me is a topical flea treatment in combination with Heartgard plus.
The dosages for Ivermectin are so minute and toxic that I prefer a formulated application over DIY. But that's just me.
ETA: Mara is absolutely right. Been through the heartworm treatments, as have many of my friends, and it's nothing nice! $30-$40 for 6 months of prevention is much easier to stomach.
