1) Wear gloves
2) Use lube
3) Once 'in' before squeezing, cover the entire bum with a double layer of paper towels! It'll prevent spray or squirts. It does not prevent the dog from getting messy until you get really good at paper towel position though. You'll most likely need to scrub up the bum area.
Be thoughtful in how you take your gloves off. Hold the messy paper towels in one fist, take that glove off inside out, and repeat in the other hand, tie up your glove, and presto, no stinky garbage can!
That's the part I'm awkward about and would rather deal with the bathtub (and the dirty dog all at once) than that tissue/towel step.
I did learn to have an open plastic bag ready beside me for the gloves.

This is very interesting to me... Our first dog would "scoot" all the time but I never even had the slightest idea about any of this... very interesting. I am learning so much !

So I definitely don't think I have it in me to do it myself but I will get Cicero in for a recheck since he is still doing a lot of licking. And since the groomers don't do as good a job I guess we will be having it done at the vets. I hope your right about the fee!

Jethro scoots every once in awhile, Skipper never does. I wonder if I should take a look at Jethro's rear end? Is the fluid from the glands that wet mucky stuff that comes out sometimes on their poop? It looks like mucus.

Just make sure and ask for a tech apt. If your tech's are anything like all the clinic's I've worked at, and taken my pets to, they do it way more often then the vets... for a much lower price.

It can't hurt anything to check them jenny! You can almost always get a little something out. The fluid is between the consistency of cream or milk and light maple syrup, and generally a light brown color. It stinks terribly, and has a very distinctive odor once you know what you're smelling. Yuck. If you've got a vet you like, and that has seen Jethro before you can just call and ask for a tech apt (same as I told Juliana) for anal glands. Might as well bundle it, and get his toes trimmed at that time as well, if you trust your vet/technicians. Some are rough, others (my clinic) take the time to reassure a nervous dog, and do it slowly so the dog stays comfortable.

Lots of the larger grooming chains (petsmart, petco) claim to express anal glands. They do it externally, and it WILL NOT get out thick stuff, or even completely empty them of normal fluid. It can help, but it's just not the same thing.
That's what I was going to say. A lot of groomers (no offense intended to any groomers here), give the owners the impression that they can deal with the issue of a dog with chronic anal gland issues, when that's not necessarily true. Also, some groomers express the glands unnecessarily, which can cause problems as well (over production). If I had a dog that requires anal gland expression and grooming (knock on wood), I would do the AG myself, or have a clinic do it, if I wasn't comfortable (as opposed to the groomer). I say this, because it should be done internally, if you bother to do it. Also, you need to be able to tell whether what is coming out is normal, or needs a flush, etc.

"anal sacs are often full during the day in between poops"
___
_wouldn't that mean the all stools would be pretty smelly or are the quantities expressed so small_?
One of my last dogs got perennial fistulas___,horrible thing but well controlled with cyclosporine at a horrendous cost thanks to the drug monopoly here
It would seem that there is no rhyme or reason__as to which dog
has full glands and which doesn't_.have to see what happens in the coming months.Does manual emptying over a long period really cause long term trauma______________

The quantity expressed is very small, but is present on each poop normally. it is a "marker". The sacs are also under nervous control and like a skunk if a dog is terrified (hit by a car for example) the glands release.
Manual emptying can cause trauma.
Add fiber to the diet, aim for wide poops at regular intervals (constipation, eg from traveling or the weather is cold and the dog "holds it") is the enemy of anal sacs.
These sacs can be removed if they become really troublesome -- we did it in
"junior surgery", it's not a difficult operation, though the anal sphincter has to be avoided.

Joyce, are you referring to canned pumpkin or fresh? How often would you suggest it should be fed?
Its not the easiest thing to buy here but available over the web of course
Jack, make sure if you buy canned that it's NOT Pumpkin pie FILLING.
Just straight up plain pumpkin.
It's funny, I have absolutely no problems finding canned plain pumpkin here. It's always available.
Whats up with your pumpkins in the States??? lol
Don't complain....TRAIN!!! |
