And this "Neither are protective of food/toys" is never ever something to count on.
I know this sounds over-dramatic, but dogs who have lived together peacefully for five years with shared bones and toys and beds can and do try to kill each other over a bone in the flash of a second. If they have been peaceable, etc., all the more reason for the human to miss what signs there may be that the situation is changing.
There are few hard-and-fast rules in my own dog book, and this one may be in the top two or three. No food and no toys are left with dogs. Ever.

Thanks! I have implemented new rules to ensure things remain peaceful. Jethro is in his crate as I write, having his own bone, while Skipper sleeps unperturbed in another room in his heated chair. All is quiet.
