Here's the mental hurdle I've never been able to jump: Why do people think it is so difficult to feed a dog a healful diet unless it comes from a bag of chow, or that they need a degree in nutrition? Nobody feels that way about feeding human children. Nobody would think it a good idea to feed a human child nothing but Special K cereal every meal for its entire life. Sure, it would keep the child alive. But even the stupidest person would know it's not optimal.
Fresh, minimally processed species-appropriate food, in abundant variety. And not too much of it. It's just not that hard.
Every time one of those kibble commercials comes on TV and they pan across the shot of the fresh chicken it supposedly contains, I cannot help but yell at the screen: just give the cat the damn chicken!

Now that corn is used for ethanol there is even less grazing land. Farmers are growing corn instead of food crops, even in countries that need the food.

Aaron, throwing the tv out the window is the best advice one can offer.
One wants to see what's wrong with this culture only needs to think of the television set as a mirror rather than a window into the world.
Yeah Meredith, that was a good idea wasn't it.
Let's turn our food supplies into something to burn in our cars.
Gee, I wonder who made out in that deal.

I watched a show on PBS called King Corn. It was an interesting show, but the main point I took from it was the fact that crop corn has been so genetically modified that it is not even edible anymore. It contains like 90% starch. Crop corn is not designed to feed animals or people. It is designed to produce corn starch and corn syrup. That's it... it's not even a FOOD anymore.

Well, February IS dental month in the vet world, so next Wednesday, my lunch will be provided by Ken from Medi-cal. He's going wow us again with the wonders of corn. Again, I will ask for proof, and again he will tell me that a vet from the company will get back to me.

Is your clinic giving discounts on Dentals? We aren't. Then again, we do 4-5 dentals per week, so we really don't have time for much more when you add our in our surgery schedule and the fact we only have 2 techs, 1 assistant, and 1 dr.
Have fun being wow'ed. I guessssss.... Get lots of sleep the night before, so you don't nap during his presentation!

Yeah, 10% off, plus a bag of Medi-cal dental food. We only do dentals one day a week usually. We have 2 doctors, 2 techs and 5 assistants.
monday - spay/neuter
tuesday - lump removal/dental/x-rays w sedation/cruciate
wednesday - no sx
thursday - spca sx day
friday - spay/neuter
We always have appointments running while one doctor is in sx., and of course we book in emergency or special procedures when needed.

Wow!! Lucky you guys!!! We just lost our 2d Dr. (to a zoo in Hong Kong!)
We do dentals and surgeries every day of the week, it generally works out to at least 3 anesthetic procedures a day, not counting if the Avian vet needs to use surgery. We don't normally have to sedate for x-rays, (although it takes a LONG time!) but if we do, we'll just make it work at the time of the apt.
At my clinic we have to block out a couple hours of apt's a day to get through our surgeries/dentals. It can get kinda crazy.

Oh, we do x-rays all the time without sedation. But, if we know that we need to sedate, we try and get them to d/o for the day.
