I wish I had someone local who I could WATCH do this for the first time... having NO experience with tracking, what sounds simple in print would sure be wonderful to see one time from start to finish (just the way I learn best, I guess...)
In any case, this is going to be my new behavior for February, and I hope to video it from the beginning to get input on what I'm REALLY supposed to be doing.

Never mind. Now that I've gotten into the link of the older thread on tracking with descriptions on both FST and circle tracking, the light bulb is beginning to glimmer. Really a good post - thanks all who were on it a few years ago.

How about another contest, Barbara? For those who like to go out - lay a track and watch the dog have all the fun and for those who prefer to get cozy inside - do article indication?

This thread has turned out so great! Thanks Katie for the link to that other thread. I found it back then but had forgotten.
I need to age my tracks more, but I'm worried I'll lose them. I swear, it's a good thing Danni's doing so well because I can barely see where I've put the food!
Ah, so much to learn still. I would also like to watch some people in person. I'm going to have to convince someone at the SchH club to let me tag along.

How about for Feb. we just do a "training challenge" instead of another contest this close to the last one? Does this sound okay to you?
I love the idea of including article indication since it is something which can be done inside or outside, so for those dealing with snow, is a good option.
Not to hijack this thread, but can you post the beginning / intro guidelines for article discriminiation to give an idea how folks would go about training that? I'll start another thread in a day or so about the challenge, and will link the tracking thread listed earlier in this post and the article discrimination info.
I think the more open the challenge is the better. Wouldn't it be interesting to see dogs and handlers of different schools, skill levels and ages work on the same problem?
It might be most productive for the participants to find their own solutions rather than follow a 1-2-3 guide.
I'm just wondering if beginners would like some idea as to "how to begin" - not so much of a 1-2-3 protocal? We can wait and see if anyone requests some guidance however.
And yes, I think it is going to be great to see all levels participate - hopefully those from all skill levels will! Good idea Ana.
