"If you ever plan to ride with others on horse back and want your dog to come along, please do teach your dog how to stay at your side when asked to"
actually lady down the road wants to now come along for rides as needs to work her young stupid Arab/Anglo being trained for competition endurance and shes too scared to go into forest by herself. wrecks my fun having someone else along - how can i politely say'
"go by yerself n stay out of me n my dogs way"? so far i have been making really lame excuses to discourage her coming along which is not real honest.
"wearing a helmet, and the horse is quite stable and dog safe, and and and..." gee people live a little hey, your stressing me out.
no beneficaries, no life insurance, giving guy down the road $1000 to pay him to shoot my dog should i go first. he won't take the money but promised to do it anyway.
no phone reception where i ride - first aid kit; good point only thing i would put in it is snake bite kit for dog? can a non-vet buy an anti-venom? what about female on heat, we have a wild dog problem here. sometimes baits go out n working dogs have to be muzzled so they don't pick them up. most baiting programs are advertised n clearly marked and have to be removed by pro after set time - some farmers illegally do their own baiting programs which is a concern.
I think some people on this forum take these little teases a mite too seriously.
As for riding with dogs, hunting has done it for centuries. You couldn't get the hounds much closer to the horses at the Meet.
The last time I rode with my GSD alongside me a collie dashed out to bother my horse. He , the collie ,was lucky to escape with everything intact.

I have no problem riding with dogs. I've done it with my Rottie. What I have a problem with is someone making arrangements to have a neighbor shoot their dog if they have an accident and don't survive. No contingency plan for yourself, fine. Go for it. Giving your dog no contingency plan I'm not so ok with.

Jack, I don't see one person telling Peter to NOT ride his horse with his dog, do you? The concern on my part (which I'm over and off the post) is we have a human who hasn't ridden for years, with a dog not trained to run with a horse, and they are galloping through the woods chasing deer, causing the horse to be injured by a stake. But it is all good... no problems. People have been doing it for centuries.
