My 3 year old Dobe has been on Orijen for 2 years (Adult Blue label) and has had loose or runny stools and foul gas since the beginning. I will switch to Acana and hope that helps.
I stayed with Orijen because he loves it so much, and his coat is so shiny and he developed great muscle tone and has high energy.
Has anyone heard that it could be hard on the liver? There isn't a lot of choice for good kibble in Canada.
Different dogs will tolerate it to different degrees, and they're certainly higher quality grains than most other kibbles, but at the end of the day, grain is still an unnecessary addition to a canid diet.
As far as the liver comment...
I'll assume it falls under the heading of "high protein diets are hard on the liver"?
I wouldn't worry about high protein content unless a dog already suffered from some sort of liver impairment. Dogs are biologically designed to consume proteins, not carbohydrates.
There's no reason to believe that feeding a dog what it evolved to consume is somehow harmful. I think mother nature knows better than that.
it took our puppy about 2 weeks to make the switch back to solid stools, we were feeding a raw diet but kept having supply issues to keep good quality food around thats why we made the change to orijen, or dog is glossy now, and loves her food, will literally do anything to get it.
With Origen recently increasing the protein content from 70 to 80%, I found that my dobe's gas was becoming intolerable..a real room-clearer :-)
I just switched to Acana Wild Prairie (grain free) which is 60% protein. I've read that alfalfa is a beneficial additive. He had his first meal yesterday..and really liked the taste.
I'll report back on any progress in loose stools and stinky gas.
