oh man....never would have gotten that -thanks Connie -LOL!! And so they have a different look or head set or something than "standard" GSD?
DDR look normally means a very dark sable and big boned, substantial type look.
Before the wall fell the East German's breeding program was isolated from most of Europe and they kind of developed a type.
I love the look.
While I agree with everyone that color should be your last requirement I personally am a sucker for a dark sable and would go the extra mile to find one that had all the characteristics that I want in a dog.

Jared, this is the breeder I recommended for you.

If I could have a second dog I would contact Betty in a heartbeat. Although, my dogs sister (from a previous litter) is being bred this year. Im having a hard time not jumping on that.
Oh how I would love to have a big, handsome, sable boy!
Not happening though.

I have the pup you are looking for...dark sable, blocky head, mix of working lines background, laid back most of the time but equally happy to get up and work...but you can't have him
He is my dream dog, quite honestly.
And I got him by talking carefully with a breeder who I already had experience with (my Kira came from her)...she knew what I was looking for, what I did with my dogs, and I just happened to get incredibly lucky. I literally called her on a Thursday and brought Vigo home on Saturday. I listened to her, even though his brother was the black sable I always wanted.
Couldn't be happier...did I mention he is my third GSD? Took that long to get the color I wanted. I am so glad I didn't pass up the others, because I wouldn't trade my girls for the world. Each has had a purpose in teaching me a ton, be it about health, temperament, whatever.
Think there is a lesson in there somewhere.

My Erika was a nice beginner dog, Czech/DDR lines, see the pic below, she smiles for everybody.
Seriously, she was the mild pup of the litter and she may be a bit much for some people.
Pepper was my first working dog and I think I was a little shell shocked for most of the first two years. I can remember stumbling into work one day with her and my brother took one look at me, gave me a hug, and said "Do you have Pepperitis" ROFL
Pepper is much calmer now and much older but we still call it Pepperitis when I need a break from the dogs. Any dog.

Thanks for all of the information. I am looking for what Betty described "DDR look normally means a very dark sable and big boned, substantial type look. " thats exactly the description.
My kids are 3 and 2, so I'm looking for one they can grow up with, after reading lots of posts on this forum I feel that I would crate train and have the puppy tethered to me during its time inside the house. We are a very active family and have a greenway "walking path" in our backyard that goes to a local park and swimming lake. Also the backyard is fenced in so the dog will have plenty of space to exercise and lots of places to socialize.
We are located in northern Indiana and would prefer a breeder within driving distance. I also am on a budget by my wife to spend no more than 1500 on a puppy. Am I asking to much for that type of money?

Jared,
Give me a second and I am going to pm you the name of a breeder in your neck of the woods. She matches up pups and people very carefully.
I've been trying to get one of her males to take a loooonnnggg Florida vacation for years now. For some reason she is just not cooperating!

Connie,
The dog will do obedience training, jogging partner, and just be a family companion.
Betty,
I would appreciate that information. Thank you

I highly recommend any/all of the Michael Ellis videos and marker training, marker training, marker training. You are getting ready to add another baby to the household - one which will happily bite and scratch your two existing babies. Ed has some great info on this site about children and puppies, etc... It can be done but takes lots of effort.
And if you and the breeder click - trust her advice on matching the right pup, regardless of what he/she looks like.
