Also she will "almost" never bark in front of me. Just when I am around the corner on the other side of the house.
Do you think she is barking to get you to come back in the room or to get attention?
Just curious because we have a serious barking for attention problem over here.
No, I don't detect this... When she wants my attention she will pick up the toy I leave with her and sometimes whine a little. She seems to be barking only to have fun.
Comment here: I would give her more things to keep her busy as not to be board but she does not like to chew much except for rawhide which gives her tummy problems and she could finish $10 worth every day if I let her. I have tried various toys, kongs and chews but she really is only interested in a toy if I am actively playing with her. I do think boardum is a problem but not sure what to do about it.

Depending on the situation? I'd honestly just opt for distraction.
"Come" and a treat is just as easy as "shut-up!"
Good point.
Also, it was mentioned in a PM thread that if "no" is your negative marker, it shouldn't be part of a command. Very good point!
It's not my negative marker, but I betcha it is for many, which would make "no bark" a not-so-good choice.

Yep...I'll do that, too. I can interrupt JD's barking at thin air or the ghost that evidently lives in our house by sending him off to find a toy.
"Find pillow" works very well - it's his "security" toy and he'll hunt it down in a heartbeat

I am following this barking conversation. No barking in the house, ever, but at night when I let the dogs out to do their business they sometimes begin barking before I open the door. I make them "sit", "quiet", before letting them go, but as soon as they are outside they bark. (ONLY at night)
I know there are deer out there, sometimes coyotes, coons, possums etc. I see the tracks. The IG acts afraid to go out sometimes, wants Pink to always go with her.
Is the collar the fix for this?

Do you care? I mean, aren't they warning away possums, etc.?

I'm thinking that there are times when dogs just naturally bark. This sounds like one of them.

Lord, if I let my dogs out at night I'd never see them again.
They'd be running game till they dropped dead or were shot.
You don't walk them at night?

Or you'd find 'em doing the two-step

I suppose they are just doing a dog's job with the barking.
Farm dogs learn as pups that chasing deer is pointless. My dogs will chase deer a hundred yards or so. They do tree coons around the house which we shoot from time to time. They only thing my dogs will really chase and track hard are rabbits.
I don't walk them at night. By night, I'm sick to death of outdoors.

Do you worry about coyotes snatching up the IG?
Maybe he worries about it and thats why he acts afraid. My dad had a small pack coming through his yard for a while and we always knew when they were around because the dogs would come bombing through the doggie door.
These were english bulldogs. Not known for bravery, or running.
Just a thought. Back to barking.

Yes, I do worry about the coyotes. Fear of coyotes is what I think began the IGs barking, she did not bark at all until she was about 10.
I find my dogs rarely go beyond the light shed by our home at night, at least in winter.
