Havent started yet,,,in IL , got awhile yet. But my plans are tomatoes bell peppers the dogs love em,,onions potatos, watermelon strawberrys,,zucchini,,banana peppers, pumkin and bluberries,, and anything else i can fit into my 4 boxes. By the end of summer i usually have a nice chunk of veggies and fruits. I have peach trees,,apple tree and blackberries,, and a bunch of bluberries. Getting ready to order the stuff though its still early.
I think I'm going to go for a "salsa garden" this year. The only problem is the cilantro is finished up by the time I get tomatoes and peppers, so I put basil or fresh oregano in the salsa which just isn't the same. Last year the pumpkins took over everything - they are out this year. And I had really buggy chard so it is on the hit list, too.
Michael, I mulch with a couple inches of compost during the growing season, that helps the soil, too. We have a short spring and then a hot, dry summer, so mulch is a must to keep the soil evenly moist.
I see the light stripe in it now. Ramona has more of a redish color down the center. Similar to The President but not as dark.
WG is supposed to be the best of the blues but I never had luck with it. Usually ended up with wilt.
All of them are super easy to multiply with simple layering.
Last year I planted Ramona growing up a bird feeder with a scarlet honeysuckle vine. Nice combo!
All of them are super easy to multiply with simple layering.
That is something I've never attempted Bob - I might have to give that a try. I think I'll get another variety however so that I don't end up with 100 WGs!
Michael, Great idea about the schools!! Your little 'maters look awesome and have inspired me to start from seed next year. I will tell you what I tell my clients when we have to pull out an existing tree or shrub... "We aren't killing it - it will be "born again" as compost!" Soooo, even if your fledgling 'maters did have to get tossed, they would have nurished your plants next year, just in a different form. (But I DO understand how hard it is to toss stuff away!!)
Can't wait to see pics when the babies are in the ground.
