my GSD gets fish burps out of sardines - it's pretty horrible but not enough not to feed it (it makes them devour the THK mixed with leftover veggies)
for the rest,
99cents/pound chicken backs
roughly 60 cents for pork necks
green tripe at 1.25$ a pound
ground turkey at 1$ a pound
THK (regular price)
and some science diet...just kidding
I feed mackerels and sardines from a can.
How about fresh ones from the fish market?
I have access to one and wonder how the dog would digest them?
I'm still learning about raw diet.

Fresh which? Sardines?
I would love to have fresh sardines to be a protein variety for the dogs' diet.
I would try them first, Roland. Some dogs (and I have one) don't like and don't digest fish very well. (The one I have who doesn't do well with "real" fish is getting fish Honest Kitchen {dehydrated raw} several days a week as a little side protein, though, and doing great.)

Oh, you're already giving canned sardines. Fresh should be no problem.

Fresh raw sardines and mackerel are great foods for your dog. You can feed them whole--heads, bones, guts and all.
As with any new food, I would start with a small piece first to be sure your dog has no problems. If it causes no upset you can then increase the amount.

Oh, Roland, just FYI since you are still learning: No raw salmonids from west of the Cascade Range. In fact, the incidence of salmon poisoning (which affects canines) has been reported northward too; I would now say any raw salmonids from the entire Pacific Northwest.
