Most climbing rope you can melt the ends together, and it is pretty f#*ing strong. I put the string through, melt the ends together, so you have a circle, with a ball on it. Then I put the seem inside the ball, and tie a knot close to the ball. That way, you have a loop for a handle as well.
In case my description wasn't crystal clear!
I'm totally getting the XL in "teal and red" and the medium in "glass and blue". Pink and silver... hmmm have to think about it.

I'm talking about putting ropes on balls that don't come with a rope (since they are about $3 or $4 more expensive at the store where I get them, with the rope)! Also, I'm not a fan of the actual orbee rope... why would you want to retie the rope that it comes with?

I don't like the original rope either, and replace it... but I used to just retie the original (and our ropes get chewed, needing periodic replacement anyhow)
I would re-tie the original because the glue wouldn't hold up to Koenig's tugging. I also like to have knot on the end. I don't want to stick my hand through a loop (Koe launches himself at it- with poor aim some days, and I like my hands attached) when i have a knot at the end, I can hold onto it better during hard tug, but still quickly drop it if I need to. Oh! With a knot on the end it's super easy to tuck under my belt, and it won't fall out. It does tend to get me bit in the butt though at times... ( MISS DANKE MYRACLE!!!!!)
Funny, how that cheap, ROUGH piece of rope costs $3-4 bucks more, huh?! It's the same where I get them. I've gotten smart recently (sounds like you beat me to the idea!) and buy the balls w/o a rope. Just add my own.

Also curious if anyone has used or seen the jute ball on a string that gripper sells just found it yesterday when I was on there website. http://gripleash.com/training.html
I missed this part Brent! I have not used that jute ball, but we have a jute tug with a gripper handle. Personally, I don't care for it at all. It HURTS! (or maybe I'm just a weenie...) The handle to my tug is true to the name- it does not slip out of my hand, but it's just so dang rough. I'm not thrilled with it, and rarely use it. I've never had any other products/leashes/lines by Gripper though.

Yeah, what a rip-off, especially since they are the same price on the planet dog website!
I might try doing one like that. I had to play tug with a ball exclusively with Faroh for a few weeks to fix a tooth alignment, and I found the loop very helpful to not letting go, if it was a straight handle I wouldn't have had the leverage constantly needed for that particular task. I don't know about the planet dog rope, but once climbing rope is melted, it's never cone apart on me.
There is no WAY I could ever have a ball or frisbee exposed on me, lol, not even tucked in my armpit. I have to put it down my jacket whe we are done or it's asking for trouble.

If you make the handle long enough, you'd still have a loop available to stick your hand through.
What size climbing rope are you using????? My rope(climbing) is too thick to be comfortable to tug with, and I think it'd be hard to get into the ball. I use old climbing rope for leashes and collars, and tied tugs though. Great stuff to have around! Also makes fantastic reins/leadropes for horses.
Koenig has a decent amount of self control, and can resist from biting me in the a$$ most of the time. I don't wear a training vest, so it's nice to have it in my belt. Sometimes when we are heeling and doing turns he'll get a bit distracted on the way around my back though... lol. WAIT! Ball!!! *CHOMP*

I'll have to check. There are 2 sizes I use, they are just the cheap ones sold as cordage by the yard. I also use it as a drag line. They also sell tubular nylon by the yard which I use as crap leashes as well.
