All right! We have a sport dog.
Whew, jeez that was like finding hens teeth.
Okay Ross, here is good advice.
Forget bite training, just plain forget it. Put it out of your mind completely and leave that part to your decoy and/or TD.
What you should be doing is using the tug as a reward for performing whatever ob is needed in the exercises for the venue you've chosen. Be it jumps (low), retrieves, heels, down stays, etc.
The tug is the reward.
Bite training will be taken care of by someone who has seen about a bazillion more dogs then you.
So stop with the flying catches on the tug. Stop with the tugging play fight bs. Start concentrating on rewarding for a nice heel or retrieve or whatever.
Concentrate on capping the hectic helter skelter behavior into something usable.

Ross its slightly confusing in your OP you asked if the next step is bite pillows or bite bar or sleeve and in your last post you said you dont even know if you are going to be doing any bite sports. It sounds like its time to make the desicion either move foward and get evaluated, and structure your training around your goals, or just get some new tugs and continue training as you are just for OB and manageablility.
I know its difficult to find a trustworthy person to do an evaluation, trust me I went somewhere that said they did all motivational training and to evalutate my dog's drive, he started cracking the whip and put her right in defense mode when she had never experienced that before, and I told him that multiple times. I stopped him and we left. So choose wisely but make up your mind and do it.

I've totally F'ed this part up, if you don't mind my saying so. If I bring the tug out with us, he is pretty much fixated on that and is less obedient than he is for a food reward. I don't know how to undo this mistake.
@Kyle--thanks man. And yeah I guess it was a bit confusing. Here was my thought: since Mals in general love to bite, I don't see Roger's prey drive and love of tug games as anything abnormal.
So even if he were to make a poor sport dog, he'd still like to bite...so no sense in not buying some heavier-duty gear which will accommodate him as he changes physically, even if it's just for fun.

I'm seriously not trying to be a smart ass....
but you can fix that by getting a good Traning Director at a club. Put the tug in a training vest, or tuck it in the back of your pants so he can't SEE it. If he can't see it, can you get OB out of him? When he give you something nice, and you reward him, play tug for a few seconds (5?) Out him, and put it away. More, OB, reward for nice work, tug, out, put it away. Make sense? You've got to keep it out of site, or you're only bribing him to work for you.

As of right now, not really.

I'd tuck the tug away. In a pocket or the back of your pants- and NOT use it. He'll know it's there, but use food as your reward. Since he can't think while he's in drive yet, you've got to keep him lower in drive while working. A good TD (Training Director) will be able to help you with this. (Capping drive)
Thats just my idea, but I'm a newbie into world of dog sports as well.

Ross do you have the Michael Ellis Tug DVD?, if you dont you should get it, I could be wrong but I would guess that if you give the tug to the dog he will not bring it right back to you. If that is the case your not ready to use tug as OB reward yet. Like kelly said take it back a few clicks, how often are you rewarding, seriously think about your reward schedule, make a plan in your head to extend the time between rewards, like today sit (reward) sit (reward), next week sit, down (reward) then on and on increasing the exercises in between rewards until you have the dog doing all the positions coming to heel, heeling 40 paces and stopping before the reward or whatever. Then he is activly trying to please you instead of reacting to the fact you have a tug or treat (bribe). he knows you have it make him work for it. I hope this makes sense.

Nope, don't have the DVD. I was going to ask about it, but I figured I wouldn't get good feedback since I've already been told to just forget about his bite for now.

For Cryin out loud,,,, Bite-WORK. WORK. Not playing tug with him.
What specifically would you like to get with Roger right now?

Hey Ross - did you hear back from the trainer? Let me know. My friend who trains with him regularly was deployed to Japan, but she's back now so I can ask her why he might not have replied (and hopefully get him in touch with you).
